I don't think I've ever had to actively equalize a mask. It just happens.

I tend to breath out of my nose ever so slightly and have never had to equalize my mask either. Once though, after a dive, during the surface interval. this lady had black eyes. She failed to equalize her mask and it looked like she got in a fight.
 
There's about a dozen "try before you buy" masks on Amazon. There's also a wide selection of masks that you can try, then potentially return after testing via the bathtub method, courtesy of prime.
