I always scrub new masks with toothpaste (the non gel kind), and then only use spit. It works every time!

Thanks for the responses. Guess I have been lucky with cleaning all my mask right the first time. Lesson one tonight in the pool for new open water students....apply Crest toothpaste to mask, rub and scrub for 5 minutes, repeat as needed.

I commercial de-fog, let it rest for a few minutes, dunk it in water for a split second, put it on. I never have fogging problems. I have a Scubapro Clear Vue which has purge in it. I use the purge feature frequently for two reasons:

1) Auto equalization of ears and mask
2) No bubbles (although my reg ejects bubbles out pretty far, I can still faintly see them; when using the nose/purge, you don't see any bubbles).

I've used home made de-fogs before; namely spit and baby soap + water mixes and they're seriously inferior to commercial de-fog. I bought my commercial de-fog in a small bottle for $5 and have used it on 25+ of my dives, plus 20+ of my g/f's dive. It's about 3/4 used, but well worth the $5.

I used toothpaste on my new mask, and I had no fog problems on its first dive. I use baby shampoo for defog. It works just as good.

Scrub those masks a few more times. Hit them with the toothbrush as well.
