Nail polish, another good idea! Thanks. Will file it away for future reference. The next pair I build will use the shakle instead of S-hooks.

Just be careful what color you use. Wouldn't want to clash!
Since the shackles aren't DIR approved,
I suspect the nail polish isn't either.
(not that I give a pich of Coon doins)

I'd stick with basic BLACK or WHITE,
(black is popular with the teens for the gothic look)
they're good for all occations, never go out of style,
however you may be accused of being over-dressed,
unless of course it's a formal dive.

Currently, the ss wire and ss s-hooks are the only approved ways of making them.

Use whatever you want...I used galvanized hardware store wire and dishwasher tubing to make mine.. :D

No offence intended "O-ring".

I was piggy-backing on your joke, I just couldn't resist.

Just making sure you knew that since you guys are heavy on the anti-DIR lately and I think it's funny so I joke around about it a lot..

I'm not anti-DIR, never have been. Sure, would like to see a little "loosening up" but I do support the concept.

On the contrary O-ring,

I am very much in support of the basic priciples and techniques of DIR, however if choose to reject some of their methods as inapproriate for the diving I do. So I'm not DIR.
It is unfortunate that the DIR phylosophy is a rigid all or nothing approach.

I know acetone breaks down some/many plastics... be careful that Mares fins aren't made from one of them before trying that.

You can use your wife's /girl friend's nail polish.
You have to use acitone to get that stuff off.
(acitone is the solvent in nail polish remover)

MSilvia bubbled:"I know acetone breaks down some/many plastics"

Good point: You are right, acetone will attack most plastics.
The amount required however is minimal.
Just paint it on the nail polish with a small (nail polish) brush,
and leave it about 10-20 seconds and it will soften the nail polish enough so you can remove the screw.

If you want the occasional short length of SS wire, go to a local bicycle shop and get some SS spokes. They come in 14 and 15 guage and the longest available will be about 305 mm. Cost at the most 75 cents each, but you only need a couple at a time. Just cut off the threaded and swaged ends.
