I use both the older and new "design", only difference is one looks newer than the other. Replaced the solid plastic face with the mesh face one the older models. I use 2 x MR22 2nd stages paired with the new MR52 1st stages for my twins and they never missed a beat, actually swopped them with my Scubapro MK25 1st and S600 2nd's.
I've heard from a Mares agent they will stop manufacturing them at some time but can't say how true that is or when it'll happen.
