I've had a veru frustrating weekend with free-flow and leakage on my and my wife's Mares Axis octo.

My wife ended up ditching it completely and borrowing a LDS rig for the weekend.

In total our kit has only doen ~25 dives, I have reviewed some of the previous posts on the Axis, and understand that they;re a bit happy to freeflow.

Therefore I'm considering ditching it and replacing the Axis with the Mares Proton. Does anyone know if this suffers the same problem? I'd hate to shell out £70 on a new octo only to find out it's the same old story...

Cheers,

Washy.

Washy,

I've had a Proton for about 30 dives now. It breathes very smooth and has not leaked a bubble yet.

Up until March, I didn't have any problems with my Axis. When it started to freeflow, examination revealed it needed a new part. But in the meantime, we simply flipped the offending bit over onto the "good" side. It worked like a champ.

When I got home I had the seat replaced and no problems now.

Basically, it looks like the Axis can be a bit touchy and may need some adjustment. But after that, it's usually ok.

So, the moral of the story is not to be so hasty to ditch a piece of equipment until ALL the options have been explored.

I previously owned an Axis and octo and was fairly happy with it until it's guts fell out onto the deck of the charter boat. It did have to take it in every so often to have one or the other second stages adjusted due to free flows.

After my primary second stage fell apart my LDS let me trade in for towards a new Abyss first and second stage. I still use my Axis octo and after about 30 dives I've yet to need the octo adjusted. My LDS sells a fair amount of the Axis regs and have had very few complaints, mine must have just been a bum set.

I did have a buddy who used a proton set up and never had any problems that I know of.

Steve.
