I'm flying out to Cozumel 3/12 and leaving on the 3/20. We plan on diving for 5 days(13-17) and then head over that night to PDC and pick up our rental from hertz at Reef Playacar. We plan on exploring PDC that evening and then heading over towards Tulum to spend the night so we can wake up early the next day and be the first in.

Afterwards, we plan on heading over to explore Coba and then finally head over to Chichen Itza to bunk down for the night. We plan on spending most of that day(19th) exploring Chichen Itza before heading back that night to PDC and taking the ferry back to Cozumel.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a cheap decent place to stay with wi-fi near Tulum and Chichen Itza?

I am glad to over my opinions; you are welcome to decide what their worth. :eyebrow: A few suggestions...

Don't buy round trip ferry tickets as there is no benefit and you never know when each ferry is going to run until you arrive really. They're very unpredictable. See about leaving most of your luggage with the Coz hotel for the two nights you're away. Have you already booked that flight? I would take all of my luggage, rented a large car from Easyway with no drop charges, and fly out of Cancun - but we'll do it your way. Do not count on your credit card or ticket booking site for collision insurance; that's a whole 'nother story, but make sure you get that from the car rental company. There's a lot more about renting cars in Mexico, but I'll skip it for now.

Don't drive after dark. I have, but it's dangerous.

Get the "Mayan Adventure" map cancunmap.com-Your complete information source for Cancun, Mexico and note the gas stations are rare. Hit them early and often. There is a lot more info on there, and you may want others.

I don't know anything about Tulum hotels, but I see there are several dozen to shop based on price, etc. See Sidestep Hotel Search I have my map loaned out but it seems like it's only an hour from PDC to Tulum. It might be easier to stay in PDC, or maybe even in Coz with the 5 or 7 am ferry depending on how early you can pick up your car? You want to avoid having the car 2 days and 2 hours as each hour is 1/3 of a day in cost.

This High-Def map is pretty good for a general view too: http://www.locogringo.com/lgunet/images/maps/roads/masterQR.png Click the map to zoom. There is a San Francisco grocery at the intersection in Tulum where you turn to Coba. Pick up a couple of gallons of water each and anything else that sounds good. We took 1 Qt plastic jugs and mixed up Kool-aid and Crystal Light to ice down in a cooler, and back packs. You may want to buy all Liter bottles. I suggested my bud drink 1 Qt in the parking lot at Coba, then carry 2 more in his backpack; he only carried 1 - big mistake! The rental bikes at Coba are the way to go but tie something to yours when you park it at a stop.

Don't drive thru Valladolid unless you change your plans to explore the city. Take the loop around it! We drove thru for a look-see. :silly: Never again!

I really enjoyed Hotel Mayaland at the back gate of Chichen Itza a lot. Lovely old hotel, very nicely updated, delightful restaurant, nice grounds, etc. I don't remember how good the lobby wifi was tho? I got a pretty good rate, but for that night - Villas Arquelogicas is about half as much, or Hotel Chichen Itza is a little more than VA. Be careful to book one in Inmediaciones Zona Arqueoloqica Chichen Itza but booking site maps are not very accurate, using Google maps which sucks, so check the hotel's site for location.

We spent 3 hours at Chichen Itza and then 3 more at nearby Ek Balam north of Valladolid - not to be missed! They're both at Cenotes along the fault line from the meteorite that killed the dinosaurs, but I'm drifting. Ek Balam's acropolis has such marvelous artwork. Sunset for that date is 5:58 PM tho, which means the roads will be dark in the jungle by 6pm, so you don't want to overdo it up there.

Hope that helps you with planning. Whoever studies the maps and makes the plans needs to be co-pilot, not the driver. I cannot get my bud to study plans at all, therefore he is worthless at map reading as I drive. Works better if I navigate, he drives, and I threaten him severely for missing turns I request. :cool2:

I had another idea but it's so different that I'm going to put it in a new post rather than edit it into the last one. There would be a 3 day car rental tho...

Blow off PDC. I spent two nights there once and didn't see anything I was glad to see. Take an early afternoon ferry on the 17th, drive to Tulum, tour the ruins for a couple of hours, stop at the grocery, then head for Coba. Tulum ruins are nice, but - well, you'll see: Not the high point of the tour.

Spend the night at the Villas Arquelogicas, Coba, get an early start on those ruins and not be in a rush, then onto CI.

Next day as above for CI and EK, and return.

From reading your post, it seems that you have allocated a too much time to Tulum and not enough for Coba. I have been to each of these locations once. My memory of each goes like this:

Tulum: Ho-hum, not very big, we couldn't go up on the largest pyramid, etc. The one thing I recall more than anything was wishing I had brought my swimsuit because there is a beach there to cool off - it was very hot.

Coba: Wow! Low expectations combined with long drive had me thinking it wouldn't amount to much. A good friend took about 10 of us as a group. Everyone left tired and extremely impressed. We hired a tour guide for the group - was worth every penny. If I could do anything different for that trip I would have brought a better camera, worn way better shoes and had some type of small backpack for water, spare t-shirt, camera, etc.

No comment on Chichen Itza as I haven't been there yet.

Drink lots of water, both are very hot even in March!!!

Dandydon/Sinistar, thanks for all the helpful feedback. Unfortunately, our tickets are booked but we do plan on leaving the majority of our stuff at Villa Blanca as we will be spending our last evening there. Also, we don't really plan on staying in PDC so that's not an issue. Our last day of diving is Thursday and we'll head over to mainland late afternoon/evening. We really only have Friday/Sat to explore the mainland so I'm open alternative routes for the four main sites. Thx

Ok if you dive the 17th, then rinse your gear and dry it before packing, I don't see you making the ferry before dark. You could dry on the 17th, pack late that night, take most bags to VB storage, then make the 7am ferry on the 18th, pick up your car, spend a couple of hours at Tulum ruins, grocery stop and driving will put you at Coba around 2pm, 3 hours there, then hurry to CI. Still pushing it.

I've done Tulum & Cobra ruins as a day trip from Coz, and I've done Chichen Itza & Ek Balam as an afternoon run, overnight and return trip - but on the latter I left my gear drying in the paid room then packed it on return.

Drying & packing, then all you want to do in 2-1/2 days is stretching it. Good luck.

Sheit, I forgot about the drying of gear part. I'm going to contact Scuba Mau to see if they can hold/dry our BC on the last day or is that not advisable? Thx

Oh yeah, that can work. They're wonderful folks. They moved our last day boat up to leave for dives an hour earlier so we could shoot for the 1pm ferry, except there wasn't one until 2.

I'm sure they'll be glad to store your BC, wet suit, and whatever else. Now your challenge is getting back early enough on Saturday to retrieve it all for packing. What time do you fly on Sunday?

You really want to see Ek Balam while your near. I think you're skipping lunch for a long, hard day like we did. Also see for ruins info: http://www.locogringo.com/research/ruins.html

Wow, that's an awesome photo. We're running high draw/low speed on this.......err...or is it the other way around? =)

Is that the view from Hotel Mayaland and did you book this at sidestep?

Our flight leaves at 1140 so I think we should have time to retrieve our gear on Sunday? I don't have a wetsuit yet....do you need one for Cozumel in March?

An 11:40 flight means you need to be at the airport by 10 so you'll be rushed, but can make it work.

Yeah, Hotel Mayaland is right at the backgate of Chichen Itza, free parking and a good entrance. That view of the Observatory is from the front door. I did find a great rate on Sidestep, booked thru Orbitz and loved the place, but if you want to spend less - there are other hotels on the back road.

Whether or not you need a wetsuit in March there is a personal question. Everyone's cold tolerance is different. I always dive at least a 1 mil jump suit in part to avoid abrasions and stings, but one cutie on one day wore a bikini - in August.

Email Opal and ask if they have many rental suits.
