Having seen the prices of catch bags in the dive shops here in NZ, I was wondering if anyone had bothered to make their own (I know there must be people out there who have done it), and if so, how and what they used?

There is nothing wrong with using a burlap bag or a nylon mesh onion bag. The standard catch bag has a wire hoop for the opening, but you could bend up a wire yourself.
You could also use nylon fabric for a catch bag. Maybe burn some drain holes on the bottom with a soldering iron. I bet you could make 10 yourself for the price you would pay for one at some of the dive shops if you wanted to invest the time.

Look for mesh laundry bags at the local department stores. It looks and feels exactly the same as the bags in the LDS catch bags. I just used some vinyl coated cable and weaved it around the open end of the bag to form a circle This cable is rigid enough to help hold the end open when you're putting your catch in, but flexible enough to fold shut while you're swimming. Use a spring clip or velcro to hold it shut.
