Hey all,

I am in Michigan and will be heading up to the family house in Machias next week. Any suggestions on dive spots in and around the Machias area? I am hoping to locate an operator or at least a guide. I am used to current, not so much to the massive tidal shift and all those lobster pots. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I did read the wonderful review of diving in Acadia. It was helpful and the wife and I may try a few of those dives.

North of Bar Harbor Eastport is the destination we hear the most about. The diversity and concentration of plants and critters is said to be amazing. Searching the forum for Eastport will net a few more ideas.

I want to say I used to have a link to a dive shop in that area but it's gone so they must have closed. There may still be options for air and limited gear to service the urchin and scallop seasons. They will be small scale operations invisible on the web. If you locate anything let me know. I want to add a directory of dive shops/fill stations in Maine to my website.

Spectrum,

Thank you so much. I am trying to get a hold of some friends in the Machias area to see if they can put me in touch with a few of the commercial divers who work on the pens in that area. I will do a search of Eastport, thanks for the suggestion.

There's a dive shop in Perry Maine, a little west of Eastport. Here's the link.

I looked at the site and it says the shop is closed for renovations so you might want to call and see what the story is before going. Also, you can contact Dustin at the Central Miane Muck Divers www.cmmd.org and find out what he knows about dive shops or air fills in the area. He's been up to Eastport twice in the last month or so.

You can also check http://www.underwatersuperhero.com out. We are a dive club in the Bar Harbor area. Diver Ed runs a dive charter every sunday morning. Call 207-288-DIVE for more information or reservations.

There are 2 local dive shops in the Ellsworth Area. One is in Southwest Harbor (Hamilton Marine) and one is in Dedham (Down East Divers).

You might also stop by the marine biology department at U Maine Machias. The odds are good that someone there knows where you can get the nearest fill. Dr. Sprangers is usually very helpful... or at least she used to be back when I was in her Zoology class.
