Only downside to the BUD is that you can't download your dive data from it. Not sure if that is important to you for your backup computer or not.

Cant I just put it in gauge mode while diving with both

I'm not sure how much it matters in practice, but in theory that's one of the selling points of the a300, geo2, etc. pelagics: they have a 'free' mode where it doesn't nag but keeps track of N2 loading. So you can switch from 'free' to 'dive' without the 24-hour wait they want when switching from 'gauge' to 'dive'. Of course the tracking is air-based so if you're diving nitrox...
