go with the brass second stages,i use the scubapro r109 and the us divers second stages they both work very well, mares is making some new ones i have been looking at.

All great suggestions

I considered the bio filter but agree that even if contamination is not an issue, it adds another possible complication

As I'm trading my Aqualung LX in to my LDS, for full credit (and after 15 dives!) I have to go new - so I'll look at a metal 2nd stage

Thanks much for the fast responses This is a great board

The current versions of the Sherwood Oasis and Maximus have a feature specifically designed to prevent dry mouth.

I used to dive a Sherwood Blizzard (hey, from TGWN, eh?!;) ). Although I still have the reg, my primary is now a Mares Abyss.

The balanced Sherwoods (Oasis, Magnum, etc.) all have the fins in the 2nd stage where moisture from your breath condenses & is returned back to you when you inhale. However, I do not find the Sherwood as good a breather as the Mares.

Unfortunately, the Mares DOES NOT have this moisturizing feature, leading to a much drier mouth.

For me the better breathing reg wins out. But I do miss that feature in the Sherwoods! :(

I've found a little toothpaste on the mouthpiece makes me salivate enough to avoid cottonmouth

Go with an all metal primary second stage. I have the Mares V-16 Proton. It is a very good reg and I don't ever get dry mouth from it.

Any mid or high end sherwood, the oasis, magnum, or maximus. They all reduce dry mouth. I used to dive with a titan LX, and passed my Titan down to my son. There's a noticable difference (I dive with the magnum) coming out of the water.

The simple solution is to tuck one half of a sugarless, menthol cough drop under your front lip during the dive. I used to commercial scuba dive and do like 4 hrs per day underwater. I forgot cough drops only a few times and it made for a miserable day.

perhaps you could look at the XS Scuba trimetal regulator,, it is made up of brass, titanium and stainless. Got Tester's Choice award and Best Buy award from Scuba Lab. Claims to be good at all depths and can breath air and nitrox. And it also has a control knob for adjusting flow. I think the suggested price is about $300.
