You said you dive in warm, clear water in Florida. What about just popping the reg out for a sec and swishing some water around in your mouth?

thanks; tried it - really does not solve the problem; plus salt water is drying; you get the sensation but it ends up adding to the problem (but I do it!) - researching, I think its beacuse its a sealed 2nd stage; design is to eliminate water intrusion and possible contamination - also better for cold water diving

Solution I think is a metal 2nd stage or one of the Sherwood's -

I use to have that problem all the time, made it not as fun to dive, thought nothing that would stop me, of course. I switched from a SP G250 to a maximus and it was a night and day difference. I totally suggest going with a maximus. I personally find it to be the most comfortable reg I have ever used, and not just from the dry mouth standpoint. It also sits better on my face and has less jaw fatigue than any other 2nd stage I have used. I also am a fan of the under arm hose routing, so you could say I am a fan...lol Good luck :)

Get an Apollo Biofilter...it attaches to your stage 1 and there is a wick inside which you fill with distilled H2O. I wouldn't dive w/o mine! The only drawback is that it reduces the flexibility of your reg hose...I had to experiment w/different lengths to find the right combination.

Today I made an even trade of my Aqualung LX for a Mares Abysis - my LDS was great; I'll give them a plug; Austins Dive Center in Miami -

They have been in business since the '50's, have very good prices and I have done business with them for over 20 years.

Comment from the manager was "we just want to see you happy...." - the LX was 2 months old and used for over 15 dives - and they swapped it with no hassle, restocking fee, attitude, etc.

I don't know any mail order service that would let you do that - even Divers Direct, a great outfit I have recently purchased from, has a 30 day return policy and the return is subject to restocking fee.

If you are new to diving, or wanting to purchase new equipment, and are unsure about its sutability, my vote is for the local shop - if they offer a return policy.

I'm diving tomorrow in Jupiter, so hopefully the reg does better and cottonmouth is a bad memory!

Thanks again to all who replied.

i could get you hooked up with an almost new abyss...it was used in the pool a couple times...that was it

I use the Mares V-32 Proton Metal. No dry mouth, breaths moist...............I love this reg. :14:

Crap - I was going to trade you my 1990ish Sherwood Brute for that AQ LX. Oh well your loss... unless of course you have another one you'd want to get rid of....:)

An almost brand new Aqualung LX for a 15+ year old Sherwood entry level reg? I think I'd hook up a "Scuda" first! (Scuda is/was a system that allows you to drink water while diving; its like a wineskin you squeeze to drink underwater - seriously -n almost 30 years of diving, I've seen ONE in use!)

Don't know that's a fair trade....you were joking, right?

In any case I'm going to keep the Abysis.

I was going to recommend the Mares. Tell us what you think after you dive. I find that if you are well hydrated and relax that, that works best. Drink water right before going in. Some people even like pouring some water into the regulator, blow it out and jump in breathing as you normally would. And don't choke on hard candy if you try that method.
