We dove Key West reef on 4/16/15 - it was not full of life and was run down - no disrespect intended to Key West but I think they did not protect the reef early on. It is definitely worth a trip up to Looe Key - Ramrod Key.
We saw sharks, a loggerhead turtle that I missed with a poorly positioned Gopro (argh), an Eagle Manta Ray and a Giant Grouper. The reef is the third largest coral reef in the world and if you have time you should go visit.
