Seems to be the case. I took a taxi this morning from HC&R to the corner of Rosado Salas and 45a Avenida. That's in Zone 1. Pretty far out in zone 1 but still in that zone. I handed the cabbie a fifty and a twenty, and was digging for a 5p coin, because it used to be 75 from here to Zone 1, but he looked at me and said, "Es ciento cinquenta." I was a bit surprised. I immediately assumed that the rate had gone up from 75 to 150 but I didn't think to ask him for the new rate card. Also, I was a bit pressed for time. Not sure what the legit rate for 2025.

FYI: the marine park day-use fee has doubled. That's legit. It used to be 109MN last January, and for as long as I can remember. Now it is 217. Per day, per diver. They told me that it just happened on 1 January of this year.

Tha regulated taxi

The regulated taxi rate is somewhere around 80 pesos per zone. Definitely not 150 pesos. Once the taxi meters come in, that will put an end to the current pricing model. IMOVQROO is trying to decide who will be paying for the meters as it is somewhere between $500 - $1000 per taxi to install.

Yesterday a taxi driver tried to charge $100 usd for short transport on Cozumel. The Mexican News has been all over it now. Check this link for video excessive cozumel taxi fares. It is getting out of hand in the whole state with the taxis.

$10 not $100

Could have been me. 😎
They were arguing over $5.
Ask the fare before getting in.

If I were in a dispute over $5, I would just pull out $100 pesos and rip it a little bit before handing it over and walking away.

If I got into a shouting match with a cab driver over five bucks on vacation, my wife would kick my ass all the way back to the hotel, and I would deserve it.

Which helps explain why the Taxi's feel they can rip off tourists at will and for ever increasing amounts.

Blaming the victims? :D

If I am responsible for abusive taxi drivers, all I can do is apologize; I am not getting into an argument over a pittance when I am on vacation. FWIW, I pay for taxis in pesos, I don’t tip taxi drivers, and when I don’t know the driver but I know what the fare should be, which is most of the time, I just hand it over and get out.
