Well I finally bagged my first lobster today. Surprisingly enough I got it at Back Beach. As expected it's a small one but it'll make a really nice lobster roll.

My wife and I forgot our flag so we stopped in at Cape Ann Divers to rent one and met Scubageek who was looking for a buddy to dive with. The three of us had a very enjoyable dive over on the left side well out past the corner. I always have fun poking around in the kelp. You never know what you'll find in there. I came across a juvenile eel of some sort. After I uncovered him from under some kelp he just stayed out in the open for a minute or two and let me check him out. Very cool. Unfortunately we didn't see the striper that usually follows us around. Must have been busy harrassing some other divers today, which there were plenty of btw.

All in all a very nice day to be in the water.

Looks like your license is paying off :)~. Glad you had a great dive. We always had a blast lobstering and for that buddy who kept showing me lobsters by putting them close up to my mask kinda stopped that behavior when I closed his hand into a partially full lobster bag ;)

It's starting to. It's too bad we got going so late in the season. The tough part is we don't have a boat and charters are too expensive to go out on as often as we'd like. So that leaves shore diving, and the water access in Cape Ann quite frankly sucks. Everything is either resident only parking or a major hike. That means that anywhere you can shore dive it's mostly been picked clean, unless you don't mind doing a rediculously long surface swim of course. And that wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for all the boat traffic and the bone heads that don't know what a diver down flag means. That's why we were so surprised to find a keeper where we were. Unfortunately it looks like we won't be doing any more lobstering until next month now. We have a seal dive next week (really looking forward to that) and then hunting for tropicals in RI the next two weekends after that. Oh and then there's my other hobby, rc helicopters, which has three events this month as well. Busy, busy, busy.

Btw, that was one tasty lobster roll last night, a lot better than any I've bought from a store.

Yes. It was a wonderful day for a dive. The weather was fantastic Thanks for sharing your dive with me. Unfortunately I had to buy a lobster roll yesterday. It was good but it just doesn't seem quite the same as a cooked keeper. My regards to you and your wife for a great time.

Congrats on your first lobster, expensive as it may be. I used to tell my wife "this one cost $36, that one $34, and if you let me go diving next wekend, I'll get you some $20 lobsters".

Is that pro-rated based on the cost of gear, license, and gas?

After buying a boat last year I figure the darn things are costing me about $250 a pound!!

Thanks guys, but oh man, did you have to bring $$$/lb into it? As far as I can see, the only way to deal with that is to simply not go there. There is just no way to financially justify it so it's better to just ignore that factor. For me bug hunting is pretty much my only reason to get in the water locally. I hate cold water and I hate the wrestling match of getting into a hooded vest, 7mm wetsuit, boots, and gloves. Especially if it's a warm day. Once I get to a certain point it becomes a race to finish gearing up and getting into the water before I pass out from overheating. I got used to shore diving in Bonaire where even though it was hot and humid you didn't overheat too badly without all the neoprene. Bottom line is I'm spoiled, show me that 75+ degree no thermocline water baby. ;) :D
