Thanks for the advice all. He seems to be better this morning - fever gone, although hand still painful. You know what they say - there is no fool like an old fool! (Just kidding Dad - luv ya).
 
Glad to hear your father is doing better. Did he end up going to the hospital or is this simply natural progression of the infection?

Soak it in butter and lemon.

Now that we know the OP's father is on the mend I will say just how hard this made me laugh.
 
Concur with TSandM above. If he had a fever with his hand looking like that, he absolutely needs medical attention, whether he's feeling better this morning or not. Get him to a hospital immediately. If the local hospital does not treat him aggressively (antibiotics at the very least, possibly xray or CT scan to rule out gas in the tissue), get him out of there and to a U.S. hospital.
