I just started diving dry and have completed 4 dives in the local quarry. The water temp has been 45 degrees and the dive times have ranged from 20 minutes to 51 minutes. I am wearing a seasoft drysuit and hood, using the same regulator and mask I have been for the past 2 years. The PROBLEM........

When i surface, my lips are very swollen. They feel a bit tingly (if that is a word). They go back to normal within a couple of hours and no other part of my body swells. I have no known allergies to neoprene, and have not had any problems with lip swelling with my regulator. I believe my hood fits properly, not too tight. My mask is on comfortably also....not tight or squeezing.

Any one run into this or have any ideas of what is happening to my lips? I look like I just had collogen and although big pouty lips are in....this is not how I want to go along with a trend! lol

Thanks...i appreciate any feedback.

i will find out, just an old stone quarry as far as I know. I have been diving there for 2 years, but not this early in the season.

Luke, I am your father. You are related to a puffer fish. :D

Sorry but I couldn't resist this one :D

Good luck finding the problem.

I used to have the same problem in very cold water (<40 degrees) and just attributed it to the cold water. It does not happen any more and I suspect my body has given up on trying to convince me to stop diving in cold water. 45 degrees is still pretty cold.

LOL, I've heard when people freeze to death they are found with smiles on their faces :)

That's another possibility, that the OP's body is responding to the cold by increasing blood flow to their lips.

Surely the body would DECREASE blood flow to the lips (and extremities and anything exposed to preserve it for the core?).

is the water much colder than you are used to? sounds like this could be
cold-water related

maybe the cold is irritating your lips
