I think that this Mexico Matt guy is a sock puppet...or a troll. he cannot be serious.

Exactly…another scare tactic from someone who sells equipment. Perhaps he should learn and teach how to breathe directly from the valve, then he would understand that a regulator is not life support.

yo

I'm thinking that tech divers are going to be buying regs suitable for the dives they intend to do. Still hasn't shown me anything in the way of an actual unsafe reg on the market at this time.

pretty much a moving target kind of discussion. there are inferior, unsafe regs that divers shouldn't be buying.

then it's cave, deep, overhead, environment, etc.

Sock puppet? Look at his profile and his listing on IANTD pasted below. Besides, looking at both your avatar pictures I would cut him some slack. I was amused however that his web-site contains hyperlinks of his intersts and activites to Wikipedia in the event someone does not know the meaning of diving, art or motorcycles. :D Based upon his credentials vs. yours and the fact he speaks three languages fluently I would recomend the usage of "yes sir", "no sir" when addressing him as opposed to your tone above. :)

How can he be that educated and not understand how a SCUBA regulator works? Maybe English isn't his first language, and I should cut him some slack. Besides, what's wrong with my pictures? Just because I dive vintage gear doesn't make me weird :mooner:

Nothing wrong with your avatar he just looks a hell of lot tougher, that's all. If I were to guess he probaly made the post to keep his name visible in order to generate business for the sport and career he obviously loves. He is quite active in most scuba diving forums and discussions. That is contrasted with those that sit on their buttocks bellyaching about PADI or DEMA not generating enough business for them. Perhaps he can elaborate as to why he addressed the subject such as being a witness to a regulator failure 5000ft into a cave system, etc. Judging by his childhood to present pictures he posted on his public web-site I would say it is very fortunate that Matt feel in love with scuba diving. :) Lastly, when I posted a question related to rebreathers a few months ago Matt was amoung the first to respond with very usefull information. Instructors with his credentails are quite rare here. Scott

There are lots of excellent divers and excellent instructors that don't understand how regulators work. Just like there lots of design engineers and regulator technicians that don't know how to teach diving.

How do you Slonda828 conclude he does not how a regulator functions? His blog would seem to testify otherwise. I would venture to say 99% of technical instructors are extremely well versed with all facets of dive gear especially regulators. Slow day?

Asked the one quoting the wrong post..

He uses terms like "regulators do not flow enough air" and such. Those are not a terms which a guy well versed in regulators would use. Demand regulators deliver air on demand, meaning that they provide only the amount of air that your lungs need. Unless you are extremely deep to the point that the density of the gas that you are breathing cannot flow through the first stage, you can pretty much use most regulators made in the past ten years in most types of diving. I just do not like the "scare tactics" from someone that divers are going to believe because he has a bunch of qualifications. I'm sure he's a wonderful diver.
