Or, buy the Dive Rite Hurricane for $399 and you can get the repair manual and parts online. The parts kits aren't cheap but at least there is a baseline for cost. It's a great regulator, suitable for cold water diving as well as warm.

Take every opportunity to save money on dive equipment. The prices for ScubaPro and AquaLung regulators are just ridiculous.

Ok..for my 2 cents worth of input, as a internet shopper myself and also a business owner I see both sides to the argument. What everyone forgets is that the LDS has rent, utilities, payroll, insurance, taxes and licenses to pay for,,that's why there is a mark up..to cover all that..an internet dealer doesnt have that overhead. Plus a LDS has to purchase parts, cameras, books, and all the things that a diver may want, and that is upfront cost, you dont pay a supplier when the item sells if it ever does..The LDS covers your maintenance issues and does your visuals, hydros, etc..all the equipment to do that service..costs money..when you go to a bar and pay 3.50 and more for a beer than the bar owner paid .55 cents for...you dont gripe about that..you pay it..just like a restaurant charging you 30.00 for a steak that only cost 3.95 for everything on the plate...I look for the deals myself and recently got a GREAT deal on a dry suit over the net and saved a 1000.00 from what my LDS was charging, but with any life support equipment..I would pay the price and get it from a LDS..and most now..if you show an internet price will try and match it or offer a discount to keep your long term business..after all..you cant go to the internet store and tell dive stories with your buddies and hang out at the dive club meetings, etc...then again, you do that at a store that has costs just to have the lights on and a license to have the doors open for you to walk in and gripe about the prices.. : )

One thing not mentioned here is the fact that the big Internet dive names such as Leisure Pro and Scuba Toys are not Internet only shops - they also have retail storefronts with the same overhead costs as other shops, plus the expenses of all of their order processing and web site maintenance.

Having worked in the golf business and seeing MAP pricing, I understand both sides of the argument for buying from your LDS or over the internet. My issue is that if you go to your LDS for all of the information that you need for your purchase research, and then buy on-line, you're cheating your LDS. I realize that you can call Leisure Pro or ScubaToys and talk to a real person, and if that's what you do, that's fine. Don't use your LDS for reference materials, and then go somewhere else to buy--that's unfair.

I just bought a Zeagle Envoy ( Christmas gift, Cozumel bound Jan 10th ) for the wife and did it backwards, I did all my research online and then bought it at my LDS which had it within 10$ of LP's price.

I understand the value of a LDS and paying a little more. But I hate that the LDS hands are tied by a manufacture. 10% or 20% is fair to pay but over 200% is just too steep. Internet stores still have to have inventory and warehouse space as well as staff to fill orders and IT people to keep the site up. If the LDS were allowed to compete the "GRAY market" would not exist :shocked2: The sad part of all this is that Aqualung and LP are laughing all the way to the bank and the LDS is left to ice dive in a 3 mill shorty.

I think the real issue here is if there is a manufacture defect on the product will Leisure Pro cover it for the rest of its life. I know that if you buy from an authorized ScubaPro dealer and you are the original owner with proof the product is covered without questions. I have seen customers get upgraded replacements from ScubaPro without additional cost to the owner for defective products no matter how old the product was. That is the warranty to consider, and not worry too much about the free parts for life. Will LP stand behind that? My 2 cents!
Thank you to all,

Thank you to all,

Which authorized Scubapro dealer dive shop do you work for?

With your expertise, can you make an estimate of what the extra cost is for that warranty?

For example, I purchased a Scubapro Mk20/S600 from Scubastore.com about 8 years ago for just a little more than half the MSRP ($330 vs about $625). Leisurepro's price at that time was about $425 for the same regulator. I have probably used 2 annual service kits in each of the 2 stages at $20 per kit for a total of $80 in parts. I did the labor myself but a shop would probably charge about $25 per stage for the service labor so most divers would have paid another $100 for the labor. I also had the defective yoke nut upgraded at no cost since it was a recall. So that means I have put a total of about $510 into it since I bought it.

That same purchase from an authorized dealer would have been $625 plus $50 labor for the annual service each year (parts would be free) for a total of $400 worth of labor charges and a grand total of $1025 or over twice the cost of my reg with no mfgr warranty.

I also have an older Mk20/G500 with pretty much the same "grey market" background. It had the older brass piston that Scubapro USA replaced on warranted regs when they experienced IP problems. That cost me and extra $35 for that "defective" part. Again, the defective DIN retainer was replaced for free under the recall. Still, no where close to the cost of the same regulator from an authorized dealer.

YMMV depending on service costs and frequency.

Big difference between RECALLs and Defective. Recalls are due to findings of a malfunction to be unsafe, immediate action required to avoid liability. Not all defective manufacturing will be recalled, for example cracked main body housing of a first stage, stainless steel (chrome) coating peeling of surface, bent piston, etc...
Those things I do not think that Leisure Pro will stand behind, simply because they are not authorized to conduct business with ScubaPro.
Again just trying to point out a different view and mostly help.

To set the record straight, LP stands behind EVERYTHING they sell! They have a store in manhattan and pay loads of rent. They are divers as well (I have dove with a couple of them). if indeed the reason behind all this is MSRP and MAP (read: greed) from those brands then do not buy them. I own nothing from SP or AL for those reasons. Only if we stop diving those brands will they untie the hands of the LDS'. Now that being said, who really cares about an authorized retailer, in this economy we need to save every dollar we can. Not buying overpriced junk is a good start. AND the LDS' need to get into the 21st century and do business the way it is done in the internet age.

Rant over now.
