The dollar has devalued against the Yen by more than 20% in the last year - and it's still heading down. I believe it's at an all time low against the Euro as well.

There is no gold to backup the dollar. It's just funny money, as soon as the rest of the world figure it out, it's over for the dollar.

I have noticed several things go up on LP by a fair amount.

Another theory is that the unemployed don't buy so the price for those that can buy is going up so they can make the same amount of income but with fewer buyers. I know it sounds dumb but some companies do it that way. If LP isn't moving as much then they can't buy in the bulk and save. The increase is passed on to the consumer.

Nah, LP's cost for the new gear is just costing them more.
The stuff that's going up the most is from the Scandanavian countries, that's where Suunto comes from (Finland).

Nearly half of the treasury bill purchased are purchased by foreign investors so in a real sense you are exactly right, as soon as investor confidence in the dollar fades, we are going to have some large problems. Our government just cannot continue to write bad checks and continue to increase both the deficit and national debt and expect that there will not be drastic consequences.

I'm curious... did the dollar have roughly similar difficulties during the high deficit spending of the 1980's?

I like to see patterns.

The dollar is just heading down into the crapper.
3 years ago there was 90 some cents to 10 Kroner, today it's over $1.50 and only losing more every day with no end in sight.
That's one BIG devaluation there. Most folks in the US are blissfuly unaware of how worthless the dollar is getting.
If you want something that comes from the EU, or any Scandanavian countries in particular (like Suunto), don't wait any longer, 'cuz the dollar isn't going to be getting any better as long as the US continues on it's massive deficit spending kick. :wtf:

Maybe the $US prices went up because LP gets many of its items from Europe (and the dollar is sucky now, against the Euro...)...heh

I don't have real facts to quote here but off the top of my head I seem to remember that it did have similar problems. Of course back then there was no Euro, the Japanese were incredibly strong, and the UK pound was in real trouble. All the business programs recently that I've seen on the BBC or CNN have a succession of financial guys blaming the US deficit and the debt situation - as DA Aquamaster said. There's a few of them predicting a real collapse as well. Most reckon that the US Goverment is actually not too bothered as it makes US goods cheaper, and imports more expensive. US citizens will probably only feel it if they want a Japanese or European car, a Suunto computer etc. Of course if they go on holiday abroad they are also going to get a nasty shock.

I'm going to make a guess here that it'll be felt beyond 'foreign' vehicles and holidays. The Canadian dollar has made significant gains, and considering the huge amount of trade between the two countries it will probably influence many sectors. That said, purchases from Scubatoys are a great bargain now, and our vacation to Florida over Christmas will cost us about 20% less now than it would have last year.

Yes, it's really been amazing lately the amount of Canada, Australia, and UK business we are seeing. We got a deal from UPS on shipping at about 60% off published rates due to our volume going out of the country now.

Yesterday, one of the Scubaboard members from Australia made a stop over at DFW airport so he could stop by the shop and loaded up with a Zeagle Brigade, Atomic Reg, computer, bag, etc.... Took us a few minutes to get everything set to Bar... had to put metric gauges in his consoles... but in half an hour we were set. Then back into a cab and over to the airport to grab his flight to London. He was dropping off another computer he bought for someone there... then a flight later back home.

He said that the savings buying from us on that stuff saved him over 40% - about a grand in savings.

You would think with an election... some folks would have stressed what the current policies are doing to the dollar a bit more.... But it really didn't get the press as much because it's not as "sexy" a topic as "Homeland security".

It's going to be a little give and take for me - there might be some slight increases from overseas companies as I buy stuff.... but if I can sell more back to other countries, it will help make up for it.

Really there have not been much in the way of increases yet, so I'd be more inclined to think in the LP case, you're seeing price increases due to the manufacturers working harder at cutting off gray market supply, so the channels that they are getting product from are getting smaller and smaller, thus they can hold them up for higher pricing.

In their case, I'd bet it's more of a supply and demand issue than a value of the dollar issue at this point.

Perhaps it is because most of their back channel supply chain is from the E. U. and as such they are forced to buy products base on Euro currency as opposed to more traditional (i.e. non-gray market/authorized) dealers who will get better pricing (i.e. dollar-based rather than Euro-based wholesale costs).
