So thanks to hurricane Wilma, my Cozumel trip is likely down the drain... I'm still itching to get somewhere warm and sunny with fantastic diving for a couple weeks, out of the path of monster storms. Anybody out there have suggestions? I know last minute deals can be awesome if you look in the right place.... I was thinking maybe Bonaire/Curacao, Hawaii or even the South Pacific? Totally depends on prices and availability. Any info would be great! thanks!
I am right there with you. I was supposed to land at noon today. All dressed up and no where to go. The credit from the airfare is about half what the airlines want on a last minute flight. I guess I will just enjoy the weather here in sunny Charleston,South Carolina, drink a few frostys and regroup. I am thinking about driving to the keys but that is a little too far from Canada. Check the web and good luck.

You mentioned good carribean locations so I'll mention other regions. For US based you might check into Catalina Island, Sea of Cortez, and Hawaii. Mediterranean you have Malta, Gozo, Egypt and Croatia. You can also try Fiji, Thailand and the Maldives. I believe Costa Rica has diving in the Carribean and Pacific.

The possibilities are limitless.

I fly out to Grand Bahama tomorrow morning, they're planning on things being great there.

I'm planning on being rich and thin- that has about the same odds. Check this before you Bahamafy yourself:

See it live, see it now: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/RT/watl-vis-loop.html

Or Predictions at: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

I think you might see Grand old Bahama in the map 'o the future... about 1900 hrs on Monday Eve.

Fred is waiting in Freeport for Wilma. BamBam, Maxwell Silverhammer.

I recall, while living in Cairns, Australia, the only route available direct to Vancouver was Cairns - Guam - Vancouver. I can't remember which airline.

So: The other way round would have you leaving Raincouver, stopover for a bit of Micronesian diving then off to the Great Barrier Reef - the liveaboards to the Coral Sea are really nice. From Cairns, it's an hour's flight to Papua New Guinea. Can you stretch the holiday by another week?.......

You did mention South Pacific

I have just two words for you then...Truk Lagoon

I was just thinking that you could probably get a GREAT deal on a trip to Coz in the next couple months... They'll be BEGGING people to come down there to help bring in that lifeblood tourist money (assuming the airport and dive ops aren't too badly damaged to be operating).
Excellent point! The locals will want all the help they can get and they will probably have some good deals going to restart tourism. I was just there a few weeks ago and if wilma damages Coz like Ivan did Cayman, that place will be a wreck for some time. I doubt it will look the same for years to come. My diving in Coz was cool because of the last hurricaine that passed through placing sand on all the reefs like snowfall, I imagine wilma may totally rearrange the reefs this go round. I for one am going *** soon as I can get there. Scooter

Yeah I'm sure Coz will be super cheap for a while after Wilma is long gone... but I'm stuck with my time frame so I'm thinking I'd better go elsewhere :) I'm going to look into the south pacific, that would be so exotic! However I'm loving the look of Sunset Waters in Curacao, great deal too... Hey does anybody know if Roatan has suffered at all from the storm? I would imagine it has but I'm an eternal optimist. thanks for the tips so far!

I hate to nitpick but Truk is north of the equator.

I can't imagin that Roatan was efected much. I watched the storm and the most they recieved were some high surf warnings. Roatan would be a great choice in my opinion. Have you given any thought to Hawaii? This time of the year the Big Island is fairly ceap and fares are lower than the South Pacific. Diving there is awesome!
