Hi all,

Basic question about diving Lake Erie: Are all the worthwhile wreck dives pretty much tech dives? If there are any w/i no deco limits, can you recommend some charter outfits or guides?

Thanks.

There are a few good wrecks within rec limits, but they are advanced dives, deep and cold. Ospry dives has the best boat in the area.

Thanks for the info.

Until recently, I had always figured that there would be a lot of non-tech dive wrecks because Lake Erie is so shallow, avg depth ~60 ft.......

I really like the Worthington out near Colchester and one of my favorite dives in Lake Erie was a day we swam completely around Middle Sister Island... and then there are the wrecks near Grosse Ile and the ones near Point Pelee... the visibility is iffy at times but the wrecks are pretty cool....

Yeah the problem is most wrecks above 60 feet have been dynamited or the ice and currents get at them. You really need to go down to at least 100 feet before you get to the good ones.

I agree with fppf ... shallow wrecks in Lake Erie really are wrecks - you can get the same effect by walking by your local lumber yard. There are a couple good ones around Pelee - Willis and Little Wachihicka (sorry - not sure of the spelling). If you are looking for a charter - I believe there is a dive store in Kingsville, Ontario that will run to some of them (not sure how often). I did dive the sun a couple of weeks ago and was told it was a fairly new discover (last August) relatively close to Erieau in 65'. Great dive with some really neat things to see (anchors, prop, large boiler and a bunch of artifacts since it hasn't been picked clean).
