Hello,

My names Robert, and I'm a diver.
Not SCUBA any more, mainly free, but still a diver.

Im looking for locations where I can hit deep water without too much of a surface swim to the destination. La Jolla Canyon fits my fancy.

But I've never dove there, and was wondering if anyone would have recommendations for an entry point?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,
Robert Scott

Hello Robert,

The drop-off at Scripps Canyon is closer to the shore than La Jolla Canyon. You can access the area by walking down a steep winding road to the beach. See google maps for the beginning of this road at the intersection of La Jolla Farms Drive and Blackgold Road. This access road snakes its way down to the beach, but you will need to walk its path because it is gated. Once on the beach you will want to walk south for a short distance before entering the water. The surf is unusually small in this area.

Alternatively, you can find a parking spot at La Jolla Shores Beach and walk north. Walk past the Scripps Pier and keep going until you pass the "Mushroom House." You can't mistake it. If you walk up to the access road mentioned above, you have gone too far.

There is a small white buoy offshore that marks the beginning of the drop-off. You can see a white object on the google satellite map (above) which is probably a kayak near this buoy.

If you swim beyond the buoy you will have over 200 ft of water below you. Knock yourself out, but keep in mind that lifeguards don't watch this area. You are better off practicing your deep free dives over the La Jolla Canyon, even though it starts a little farther offshore. Park at La Jolla Shores beach and walk south to the boat launch area. Swim straight out and you will soon be in deep water. It is a good idea to first stop off at the lifeguard station and let them know what you are doing. They can give you more precise directions to your entry point, and it may help them to identify your body when you wash ashore later.

Hi,
with our free simulator you can virtually dive La Jolla Canyon. So far we have 2 sites there: a) Vallecitos Point and b) Murray Head (goes down to > 300ft). Both have GPS coordinates.
We plan to release a site for Scripp Canyon in a couple of weeks.

Best Regards

Alberto
