I have a GoPro and I use two Kraken 3500 lights.

I stumbled on the Kraken remote - which I didn't even know existed. Kraken Remote Control

Has anyone used this and if so, any opinions?

Also, I would need to get fiber optic cables -- Bluewater says the Kraken cables are not as reliable as the Sea and Sea. But the Seas and Sea are twice the price -- $170 for two cables. Any opinions on fiber?

thanks

tom

Maybe if I had broken cables this would be an option, but alas....
You can buy the connectors from Optical Ocean Sale for a few bucks. But don't toss your optical cables when they inevitably fail.

Bumping an old thread 4 years later, but I can indeed confirm that Kraken cables were iffy - I got 24" Kraken cables for the new version of the remote, the Kraken RC02, and no go - remote would trigger by infrared without the cables, but nothing with the Kraken cables...

Luckily I was sent some AOI multicore as replacements, and they work fine.

As a caveat, my lights, Kraken Hydra 8000 WRGBU V2, which just came out, are unfortunately not exactly fully compatible with the remote - the mode dial, which looks very nice and handy, is replaced by dimmer dial operation (long press to access standby / change modes, which is much less convenient than a dial knob)

This is surprising for a Hydra light model which just came out, and a letdown...

If you want to check model compatibility, please refer to this chart which is shipped with the remote (not published online AFAIK):

On the lucky side, contrary to what is written above, the remote can power "120% turbo mode" on the Hydra 8000 WRGBU-V2, which is a major relief (imagine getting a remote and not being able to use the lights at max power with it... 😅 )

If anyone with a better background in Mandarin can make sense of the last sentence, it seems to indicate that it's possible to "upgrade" the device (which I guess is the remote itself) so that it is compatible, but for a fee... (?!)

Again, for a light which just came out like the Hydra 8000 V2, it's a little odd - I've contacted Kraken about this, and waiting for Kraken's response to post my reviews/feedback of the light and remote here and on Waterpixels.

So far it's been a mixture of pleasant surprises (light quality, constant output etc) and problematic issues / design choices (button ergonomics with WRGBU modes, remote compatibility with their most recent products, partial information given about this, potential fees to "upgrade", etc...)

Let's see how this is handled!

cheers

As a follow-up, Kraken has informed that an "upgrade" should be possible for this combination (Hydra 8000 V2, and RC-02 remote).
I'm really looking forward to it, as other than button ergonomics I'm really happy with these lights

I am aware I am reviving an old thread, but this is something that I would like to understand better. What is this "upgrade" that Kraken is referring to? Is it being sold on the website directly now? I have a Hydra 6000 V2 and an older Hydra 5000S+. I am thinking of getting a remote to make it easy to manage my lights underwater.

It's not clear - I think Kraken has worked with the manufacturer to make Hydra light heads compatible with the remote's "hydra" mode. You can download the manual on their website here, and look into the two options for the light, either blue mode or green mode basically, and check with them what is possible with your lights
cheers

thanks for getting back to me. I just sent an email to Matt asking him if the remote will work for my setup - will post here when I get a response so that it can help others in a similar situation

Quick update: Matt indicated that the older remote would work better in my case (mix of old and new hydra lights). With the newer remotes, only the LTD mode (white light mode) will work since it's not fully compatible with the older hydras.

Also, I got 2 multi-core optic fiber cables from Ali (217 cores) for $22 a piece to test - I will report back after they have been delivered and I get a chance to test them.
