Thai Turtles RCP
New
Hi everyone,
I am a representative of the New Heaven Reef Conservation Program on Koh Tao and its Koh Tao Turtle Identification initiative.
This initiative began on July 25th 2015 and its primary purpose is to acquire data (Photos of both sides of face, dive site, behavior and date) construct a database of all the resident and transient sea turtles (Hawksbill, Green Sea, Olive Ridley) in the Chumphon Archipelago, from this data we can understand their behavior, movements, and use this to better protect them. Since the projects inception we have identified 72 different individuals.
If you happen to have passed through or you live in this region and have gone diving/ snorkeling and taken photos of sea turtles, we would love it if you were able to submit your photos to either our Facebook Group
Koh Tao Turtles or to our email address: thaiturtles.rcp@gmail.com
Essentially with each photo submitted we also require the following if possible:
- Location on Koh Tao
- Date of observation
- Approximate depth and rough size (metric please)
- Behaviour (feeding, sleeping etc)
- Additional info that might be relevant such as damage and markings.
Ideally images of the side of the face and the top of the shell would be most useful.
This information will be used for academic research and conservation purposes only and will hopefully benefit our turtle populations on Koh Tao and the Chumphon Archipelago.
We would love to see photos taken over the past several years to create a strong baseline data for Koh Tao and the Chumphon Archipelago.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.
Kind Regards,
Amir
