Hello everyone!

I hope everyone is doing well despite the pandemic.

Have any of you ever seen a sea turtle in the Gulf of Thailand whilst in the water or on a beach, were you able to get a photo or a video of said sea turtle, no matter how old it is, we here at the Gulf of Thailand Sea Turtle Photo Identification Project under the Aow Thai Marine Ecology Center (AMTEC) would love to see it.

The other name for this project is Tao Talay Aow Thai - เต่าทะเลอ่าวไทย (TTAT) which is the latest iteration of the sea turtle project which aims to document and monitor sea turtle populations throughout the Gulf of Thailand. The project began in early 2015 at Koh Tao, and has since amassed over 1600 observations of over 225 turtles across 10 years and 5 provinces. Observations and identifications typically require clear photo or video evidence of a turtle’s head, the patterns of which can be used to identify individuals. In addition, information regarding date and location of sighting are crucial. While certain areas are well represented, sea turtles from other regions (i.e. Chanthaburi, Chumphon, Trat etc) remain largely unknown.
This project utilizes citizen science with the application photographic ID (Photo-ID) to build this database but we still have gaps in our knowledge.

If you would like to help this project fill in some of our knowledge gaps then please send through any images/videos you have of sea turtles you have encountered in the Gulf of Thailand, no matter how old it is, along with the following data if possible:
Date
Location/Dive Site
Time
Depth
Interesting Notes about behavior (feeding/resting etc), mating, interacting with another turtle or marks and scars.

Please send to our:
Email Address: kohtaoturtles@gmail.com - (you can send via dropbox, Gdrive, WeTransfer)
or FB Page: Tao Talay Aow Thai https://www.facebook.com/groups/TaoTalay/

If you happen to submit an observation of an new unrecorded turtle then you may choose a name for that particular individual for a database and social media purposes. Any help by the wide diving community would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Amir Patel
