I tried out a new location for my dive knife in the pool yesterday. I mounted the sheath to the back side of my gauge console. In the pool, it was easily accessible by both hands and very easy to see for re-sheathing. I like it a lot here.

I'm not a DIR diver per se, but I've tried to evaluate why this would not be a desirable place, and I can't come up with a reason. I've never seen anyone mount a knife there, so I'm wondering if there's some drawback that I'm not thinking of.

The gauge console does move around a bit. I'd highly suggest mounting it to a belt or a bcd somewhere. It was easy in the pool but now add low viz, currents, surge, etc. Plus, moving a sharp blade around my hoses isn't a good thing, in my opinion. On a snug belt or bcd, the sheath should be fairly stable allowing for very easy replacement (putting knife back) without needing to hold the sheath with 2nd hand. Plus, plan for the future. If you switch to a hoseless computer or just go with a wrist mounted gauge and good gas planning, you won't have that console anymore.

On your console? Absolutely not! It would make it much harder to retrieve when you need it for fighting off sharks. Manly men wear their knives ONLY strapped to their legs!

On my old Reg set I have a hose protector cut in 2 pieces on the end of my HP hose. The knife sheath has 3 cable ties connecting it to the hose protector with the handle towards the gauges.

California Kelp Diver. Had it configured this way for 15 years. No problems. Since it is attached, I never forget it (my main issue). Since it is attached it is cleaned after each dive with Reg set (I use to sometimes forget. Then have a harder time cleaning later). Always have access to my gauges. Never have to feel or look for my knife since it is right next to my compass and SPG which I am already looking at. No problems with kelp entanglement since handle facing towards SPG. Never had an issue with ever coming close to cutting hose.

I now have my spearfishing knife on my left outer forearm. Handle facing wrist. I use it many times each time on the water. Not much difference in putting knife in sheath. I guess more chance of stabbing my arm now for the past 6 years. I had it on my belt and broke the sheath on a rough rocky exit. Manufacturer warrantied the sheath. I want to find a better spot for it on my wetsuit where it will not be between me and the rocks where my body weight will press against it and the rocks if a rough rocky exit. Some have a knife pocket sewn on their wetsuits. I have seen chest knife pockets and side leg knife pockets on wetsuits used for spearfishing.

When diving warm water (no gloves, or at least not drygloves) I often attach my knife to the power-inflator hose - easy to get at, easy to put back away.

If I need a dive knife I rarely dive with one only. Usually I have two, plus shears.

Is there no issue with your presumably steel knife affecting your compass?

I will check. Since I depend on the compass. Northern California Kelp Diver -- low Vis.

My compass is currently on my wrist computer strap. The plastic knife handle is touching the computer wrist strap.

My old Reg the knife's steel pommel is touching the silicon console where the HP hose goes through. The compass is furthest on the console. I will have to check it and post pics tonight if I have time.

I have never had a problem, but will test it out. I think I already tested it years back, but cannot remember.

There may not be much attraction depending on the alloy of stainless steel.

I neglected to include in my post that I tested the compass before I mounted the sheath. It appears not to be affected by the knife, even when I touch the knife to the compass housing.
