Hemingway himself however frequented the "old" Sloppy Joe's bar, which is not called Sloppy Joe's anymore. It is a dingy, dark, musky cave-like dive that only serves beer and liquor. Not a bad place to have a drink, especially if you are a historian. It is called Captain Tony's now, I think. Don't remember exactly.

The "new" Sloppy Joe's is a huge bar and grill several blocks away from the other. Food is good. Atmosphere is great. Lots of Hemingway memorabilia on the walls.

Hemingway frequented both places (you are correct, the old place is named Capt. Tony's and by calling it a "dingy, dark, musky cave-like dive" you are being kind ). The story about the dust-up is kind of funny, they tell it if you do the tour of the Hemingway house. Personally I could drink and read Hemingway all day for weeks on end, he was the quintessential man's author. They say half of American writers tried to write like Hemingway and the other half tried not to. :) I'm in the first group...

John (who wishes he had a lighthouse to guide him home after a night of lighting up the town).

In Marathon is a great restaurant on the water with a good view of the sunset...its called The Island Fish Company...I love the cocunut shrimp and margaritas!

No Name Pub is a must when visiting the keys...I think its on Big Pine Key or Deer Key...its a little hard to find but they have the best pizza on the planet and make sure you staple your dollar to the wall...along with the other 80,000 dollars that are already up there!

One of my favorite drinks is a "Pain In The A@@", a swirl of Pina Colada and Rum Runner. Yum!

I know this is really late for this post...but....our favorite place was Blue Heaven. It was SO Key West and more of a local spot IMHO. Colorful, roaming roosters, cats on the hostess stand and a welcoming bartender with a fresh bloody mary. They are open for breakfast-lunch-dinner. I had a great eggs benedict with key lime bernaise sauce....very yummy! Our Wind/Wine charter staff recommended it. (I also recommend going on a Sunset Wine Sail...it was our favorite thing we did.)

Rum Runners, Hurricanes, and Margaritas are good choices in KW. Check out Fat Tuesdays if you enjoy frozen drinks. They have MANY to choose from.

Rusty Anchor on Stock Island is where a lot of real locals go for seafood and is not overly crowded with tourists. Turtle Kraals is a good downtown place just a little off of downtown (try their cracked conch sandwich). Most people don't realize that KW has (had) a very strong Cuban heritage, so for good Cuban food that, again where locals go, is Pepe's or El Cibone. The best Cuban Sandwiches are from Five Bother's Grocery on Fleming. Drinks, go to Ricks or Dirty Harry's. Stay away from Sloppy Joe's (tourist trap)!

Good Luck!!
