I can imagine why. Few folks are aware of the very open lifestyle there. It's always good to be informed so the culture shock is not quite so great. :)

Are you advising against a family dive trip to Joe’s Tug during Fantasyfest?

More of a logistical problem...Island House in men only so if she made a reservation for her and her husband she wouldn't be able to stay there.

For what it's worth here's my two cents...If you're diving in Key Largo stay away from Ocean Divers, unless you like being jammed onto a boat with 45 other divers and snorkelers. If you drive down the road about 10 minutes you'll find Conch Republic Divers...Great people, nice boats, and trips to the best wrecks. They have an apartment you can rent from them or stay across the street at the Tropic Vista Motel. Not the nicest place to stay but it is cheap.

If you head to Key West I recommend Captain's Corner dive shop. They have a good size boat with all the safety equipment, they keep track of their divers, and they have really cool DMs. If you're looking for instruction see Captain Bob Camus at Captain's Corner, he's a great instructor. On top of that they used to offer free rental gear for life if you get a certification with them.

Also doesnt hurt to go through the pennekamp park boat, very cheap, very nice staff.

Thanks everyone for your input. We are now also going to Conch Republic for a few dives based on your recommedations. It seems that Key West is not a great place to dive... Is it even worth taking a day dive there or just stay in Key Largo/Tavenier? We are not big drinkers so its not like we party hard which sounds like that is the thing to do topside. I found a decent deal in Key west with Southpoint and the Duval house (B&B) so thought we might try but if the diving isn't great may just ditch the idea... Thoughts??

Key West is fun topside and you don't have to be a drinker to enjoy it... just not great diving. Lots of shops and museums to visit. It's a neat funky town that is trying very hard to keep its character despite the mobs of tourists from the cruise boats.
Hermit Crab and I took a day trip a couple months back and got our Kinos (from the shoe factory in KW), ate at the Margaritaville cafe, and watched the sunset at Mallory Square. Driving back with the moon illuminating the water as you cross the bridges is beautiful.

But drinking a little certainly doesnt hurt (lol)

Diving in Key West was not abysmal in our experience. We even got an extra 'free day' away from work rescheduling to depart there instead of Ft. Lauderdale where we flew in due to Frances. Broke our hearts to tell our bosses the soonest we could return was a day later than was scheduled due to flight availability . . .

We swam with a huge hawksbill turtle and watched a redeye sponge crab on our night dive at Nine Foot Stake in Key West. On that same day, earlier, we saw the only Golden Coney we have seen in our travels (of course after all the film in the camera had been shot - went to digital the next year), as well as a large nurse shark, same site. Cayman Salvage Master was a decent wreck dive. These are just the extreme highlights. We never did see Joe's Tug - there was a quip that 'the ladies had had their way with him, referring to the 2005 hurricanes, and Joe's Tug.

We stayed at Lime Tree House the second (impromptu) part of our trip, and Pier House Resort during the first (planned) half of our Key West stay. Both had their individual merits, and were in different parts of 'town' as it is.

Lots of great restaraunts to enjoy in Key West, even for tee-totalers like us!

There is a clothing-optional restaraunt if you're into that kind of thing. Only one we've seen in the spots we've stayed.
