I'm taking a big trip down to the Keys and have all my accommodations set for Key Largo, Marathon, and Ramrod Key, but Key West seems to be causing me problems. The rest of the dive shops throughout the Keys had recommendations on where to stay on their websites. However, the Key West dive shops don't seem to have anything on their sites (except to call them on Capt's Corner site). I'm going to call Subtropic and Lost Reef (diving the Vandenberg on 29 Aug and some reef dives 30 Aug) tomorrow to see what they recommend, but I was wondering if any SBers had recommendations. The SB Keys Guide only had the Crown Plaza La Concha under Key West. It's nice, but I wanted to see what all my options were. It will be just me on 28-30 Aug (checking out 31 Aug) and my budget is upwards of 200 dollars a night and a hotel that doesn't mind wet dive gear. I don't need to be near the beach (one of the posts I looked at wanted to be close to the beach. I would actually rather be within stumbling distance of the nightlife and/or places to see.

Any thoughts? I appreciate any input.

you will definitely be within stumbling distance at the Crown Plaza La Concha..Its on Duval St.Can try Southernmost Hotel too.Its a bit far to be called stumbling distance though.

I've stayed at about half the bed and breakfasts' around duval and also the Hyatt on the other side of the island by smathers beach. All were very nice. If you can get into the Hyatt at the Marina you'd be the closest to the dive boats and also walking distance to all the bars.

i just got back from Key West today. Stayed in the Almond Tree Inn. Absolutely amazing. Small 22 room place, half block from duval st. Happy hour w/ free drinks from 5-7. Got it for round 109 a night. Its right on Truman Ave.

We got ripped off by management of Southernmost Hotel in Key West.

They charged an extra $65/night for an oceanview room. We were told it was on the end of the building facing the ocean.

What that really meant we found out was that it was on the 2nd floor and you could see the ocean over the property next door easier because the cars weren't in front of you room.

complete rip off of $65/night extra.

Management was very rude to us when we complained that we'd been lied to about with the room. They have a 3 day cancellation policy, so we had to pay for the rooms even if we didn't stay there because of this. :shakehead:

stay away from this place.

oh... they also didn't have enough parking for the entire motel. hotel desk said you have to park on the street and feed the meter. so every couple hours I had to go back down and put more quarters in the meter to keep it from being towed. :shakehead:

I've heard other complaints about Southernmost too.

Douglas House is on the quieter end of Duval and has parking one block off. Give them a try next time. They are not 5 star but they are not budget hotel either. Nice balance.
