So I'm looking at maybe a trip to Key Largo this upcoming January and had a few questions I forgot to send to Pirate Island Divers (thinking I'm going to go with them) so I'll just shoot them out here. As far as the oil situation goes, I've been reading over a couple threads and it seems like there isn't really a concern for contaminated water in Key Largo. Is this still the case or is some oil migrating? What about places to eat? I've read that most of them are overpriced and not very good, but there are exceptions...what are the exceptions? Any other suggestions for food that doesn't involve making it myself? As far as the Marriott Key Largo goes, what about their food, is it any good? How about the diving around Key Largo, what kind of vis will I have in January?

All I can think of for now, thanks guys!

I think you will be hardpressed to find any oil on your Key Largo dives. You shouldn't be concerned about that at all. I was there in June- no oil then and I just spent a week diving in Pensacola and didn't see any.

The retaurants I like in KL are:Snappers, Sundowners, Key Largo Fish House, and the restaurant at the Marriot (is very good imho).

The weather in January is unpredictable. You could have a perfect week or be blown out on any given day. I have been down during the last week of December knowing I could be blown out and had perfect weather each day. Not predictable.

You might ask a Mod to move this to the Conch Divers forum, it will get lots of replies there.

Ahh ok, I was wondering about the lack of replies. Yeah, if a mod sees this, please move it there. :D I figured the oil wasn't an issue but I just wanted to make sure. When you say blown out, is that as in dive conditions are terrible or the weather just plain prevents you from diving?

There is no BP oil in the Florida Keys. End of story on that subject.

Restaurants that I like and feel offer good value and good food:

Buzzard's Roost - Key Largo
Mrs. Macs - Key Largo
Bentley's - Islamorada
Snapper's - Tavernier
Hog Heaven - Islamorada
Chad's Deli - Tavernier
Fish House - Key Largo (a bit pricey but always a good meal)

Yes, "blown out" meaning in general " the weather is not good and the boat isn't going out".

You would have a better chance in less than ideal conditions of going out if you book with a dive op that has a nice big boat like Horizon Divers, Ocean Divers, and my personal favorite- Conch Republic Divers.

Ill second Brians list of restaurants. The buzzards is a block fro my dock and across the street from my house which helps:) mrs macs is at mm100 near all the hotels.

Yes, absolutely no oil here.

Yes, Jan is either gonna be great or a bit er... Sporty :) we had a cold one this year so I'm hoping for some better conditions next year.
