Bob3:
The next time you pass through the gate at a nuke plant, carry a couple Coleman lantern mantels along in your pocket. If their radiation detector machines are set properly, they should light up.

Er... could you elaborate on that? Which part is the joke?

Not a joke. Coleman lantern mantels emit great beta particles. We have used them to source check low level radiation detectors when I was a nuke. Once I went camping on the week end. Went to work on Mon. Had no problem until I passed thru the radiation monitor. Lit up like a Christmas tree. I had left a new mantle in my coat pocket. It got confiscated. It could not leave the plant once it got in.

Wow! So if they produce beta radiation so much, what's the risk to say... sticking your food next to the things?

This sucks! I use Coleman lanterns all the time. How much radiation do these things put out?

I'm switching to LED lanterns...

The radiation from a coleman lattern mantle is less than the smoke detectors that are in your house. Look inside one and you wil see the warning.

Went out and got a few dives in at the hot hole with Quetzal yesterday (12/12/04). Went out with bermuda triangle, great group of guys. Water temp was as low as 60 degrees in parts, but when you were in the main stream it was around 68 degrees. Viz was around 10-15' and was pretty decent. Definately had a blast riding the streams and would definately do it again in a heartbeat, thanks Quetzal.
