My buddy (the Curmudgeon) and I formed our own group JustUs - and headed to Bonaire 3/21 3/28. (We got tired of people asking 'what group are you going with' so decided to be our own group) Delta got 3 of 4 bags in with us, 1 dive bag arrived on the Continental red eye Sunday morning. We met Jepuskar on the ATL BON leg of the flight. Sorry we didn't get to dive together, just means we all need another trip.

Stayed in #305 a ground floor one bedroom at Buddy's. The good location, proximity to Klein, convenience, the dive staff, breakfast (bring coffee mug from room as their cups are espresso sized), the house reef, all their rental gear looked to be new Cressi regs and BC, the boat schedules. The furniture was fairly new, newer sheets and blankets and beds. Rental truck in really good shape. Ladies who took care of our unit were wonderful. The bad the resort is a bit tired and worn, no ceiling fans in this unit, lacking some kitchen essentials (like a pitcher for my lemonade). The bright light outside bedroom window which we resolved via a little cardboard picked up from the Warehouse dumpster and some duct tape from Playa Trading (part the joys of life with an engineer). TIP print off and complete registration, rental truck agreement and dive shop paperwork before you arrive. This saves a ton of time processing in.

The REALLY REALLY BAD the mosquitoes. Never seen so many and I'm from New Jersey Land of Mosquitoes. They were swarming. Don't leave home without good insect repellent, may want to pick some bug spray for the room. We had no problems, a few bites each, but saw people with huge welts all over their legs like chicken pox. Dengue is in full swing, be careful.

The diving all good! Not as many dives as other trips. No problem getting signed up for our boat dives. Nitrox mix usually 31.5 - 32.5, fills good (3,000 psi), one short tank all week (2,700 psi), no problems w/ leaking o-rings (had a few last trip). Most dives 55 - 75 fsw for 50 58 minutes. Water temp 78 - 82 F. Dives-
Buddy Reef Scientifico - La Machaca (multiple dives) spotted drum, all the pretty fish, first dive just south of La Machaca saw a Reef shark 4-5 foot cruising below around 85 fsw. (Independent confirmation from my buddy who initially spotted it.) The Curmudgeon likes true night dives, not twilight dives, so Weds @ 9:30 w/ no moon and no other divers, we had the reef to ourselves. I switched suits and failed to add weights which I discovered after the Curmudgeon tied his strobe off to a mooring and I couldn't drop. Swim back, fight the bugs off, pick up an extra 2 pounds, fight the bugs off, gear back up, swim back out. Luckily the Curmudgeon was in happy dive mode or I would have 2 lbs of lead sticking out my head. Started w/ JustUs divers, small tarpon (3 ft) joined by larger tarpon and as we drop down to agreed depth, an even larger tarpon and suddenly I don't like these odds. Around 10 minutes into dive, the 3 tarpon scatter like quicksilver and my mind races what drives off fish that big??? Enter the largest tarpon yet - fully 5 ft with a blemish on his scales. Lured back by our lights we spend the next 40 minutes with all 4 Charlies chasing us. I was intimidated. They knock into you and don't move off after they hit you. It was full body contact diving and the divers can't fight back. Like big dogs begging at the dinner table annoying. By dive end I was just mad at them.
Forrest (Klein, boat) big French Angels under boat ladder, large blue parrotfish, tons of black durgeons.
Andrea I and II little rocky but fairly easy entry, ton of fish, spotted eel, spotted drums (at least 5), big blue parrotfish around 2 feet long and fat feeding in shallows, honeycomb cow, sharp tail eel, lots of flamingo tongues, family of filefish, 4 eyes.
Knife (Klein, boat) schools of blue chromis, sergeant majors, blue tang. I like to watch the fish highways as the schools travel up and down the reef! The Curmudgeon found a funky tan sea urchin with nubs instead of spines, very different, I believe it was a Stone Club Sea Urchin.
Hilma Hooker (boat) still 97 fsw to the sand on my computer. Did discover the original name though!
Capt Don's Reef (Klein, boat) nice coral formations, juvi 2 inch peacock flounder, juvi Nassau grouper hiding in coral head, 2 big Carib rays playing in the shallows being harassed by a couple trunkfish.
Sharons Serenity (Klein, boat) perfect sun allowed a nice deep well lit dive. Pair of large French Angels kept us amused darting under a coral bridge.
Buddy Bari tons of late afternoon fish traffic. Made it beyond the Samur mooring before we turned. Nice size jacks and grouper made me hungry!
Country Gardens (boat) pinnacles or big rock piles nearer the surface teaming with fish. Great coral formations. Lobster, cleaning shrimp, eel, big porcupine.
Tori's easy entry as the outflow from the salt works has been filled in leaving a cut through the ironshore with very little wave action and mostly sand bottom. A group of 6 guys arrived a few minutes after us and we ended up hitting the water about the same time. Long surface swam to the mooring, the guys in the other group were complaining as we all kicked. Near the edge of the reef the Curmudgeon suddenly orders me under! As I do I see a beautiful spotted eagle ray cruising right below me, doing ray stuff. Alerted the other group and we all paused to watch. We could end this dive right now and it would be a huge success, but on to Tori's. Gentle slope down to sand bottom, tons of fish. On our return we saw a Caribbean stingray cruising being harassed by trunkfish. The sandy area on the way back was covered with some large trunkfish. I love to watch them teeter-totter as they swim.

Next the food!

Nice report. I was there at the same time but did not find the mosquitoes that bad. Never got bit. Thank God for Off Deep Woods!

Great report. Buiddy's is my favorite so far. Thanks.

When Wallob & I did our second night dive at Eden's Rubble, 2 tarpon stuck to us like white on rice. Neat, and thankfully I'd read about how they like to stick close to night divers, because suddenly realizing there's a strange 4 foot fish 3 or 4 feet from you coasting by in the dark is a surreal experience until you realize it's harmless (I know we're low risk to get grabbed by a man-eating shark or large barracuda, but for a split second when you don't know what that big fish IS...).

I've been to Bonaire twice but haven't done any boat dives or been over to Klein Bonaire; did you find it worthwhile, vs. just doing the shore dives off Bonaire itself?

Richard.

We took a boat to Klein on our trip last year, and although I would say hands down that Klein had some gorgeous sites, however the time, hassle, and restrictions of boat diving kept us from going more than a couple of times. We'll never make the mistake of prepurchasing boat dives in a package again, and other than a charter (or two) with East Side Divers this year, we'll be doing all shore diving.

Thanks all. I tried to provide an unbiased view of our trip- the good and the bad so that you can render your own opinions.

Boats to Klein - I like them. Not sure about other ops, but I don't find the Buddy restrictions to be prohibitive to our style of diving - depth limit 100 fsw, 60 minutes, either stay with the guide or do your own thing, turn dive @ half tank or 30 minutes. We had people who never left the mooring site, hanging around taking pics on the slope. There are also sites on Bonaire proper that you cannot get to by shore - Rappel and Country Gardens are 2 - and the terrain is markedly different from neighboring sites. For anyone with knee or back problems, diving 1000 Steps by boat would be a joy, scratch that - for most of us 1000 Steps by boat would be a joy!

Vince - as a fellow Jersey-ite I hear you on being elevated, I prefer upper floors for airflow and security reasons, but Buddy's put us ground floor and we stayed there.

DMaven - glad you enjoyed my tarpon! It's given they show up on that section of Reef, they are there during the day harassing you. Having all 4 show up and literally bang and crash is a bit disconcerting. They reminded us of our first Labrador - a big food beggar who thought even at 90 pounds she was a lap puppy.

On to food, while your tastes and opinion may vary, we are based in a suburb of Philadelphia and find the prices in Bonaire to be better/cheaper then home much of the time. We eat a large breakfast at Buddy, nosh on leftovers, cheese, meats, fruit and bread for lunch and spend most our food funds on dinner. After our Saturday run to Cultimara we made reservations at Capt Don's Rum Runners, too tired to venture far. Great table, right on the water to watch the sun go down. Food great (Boka Stoba - local beef stew!), service exemplary, 2 fruity drinks of the day, split a salad, 2 entrees and 2 desserts set me back $60 something. Left overs turned up for lunch on Sunday.

Sunday was my birthday and after a couple dives, the Curmudgeon suggested we call it a day, cruise town and grab eats, my choice. I chose Salsa - a fav. We had a corner table upstairs overlooking the water and sunset. After perusing the menu the Curmudgeon asked about the Chef's option. Being adventurous, we opted to allow the chef de cuisine to design a 3 course meal. Our server (tall, thin Dutch gentleman if you've been to Salsa you've seen him, I just stink with names...) asked if we had any food allergies/dislikes, preferences and if raw, meat and seafood were OK. These answers in mind they created a raw tuna app to die for - a timbale of sushi grade tuna mixed with capers and red onions bits plated over some mixed greens. Wonderful with the great rosemary bread and garlicky butter! Main course was a chunk of fillet mignon on one corner and a chunk of pork loin on the other coupled with mashed potatoes and fresh asparagus spears. The beef was in a wine demi-glaze while the pork had a soy-citrus-chile pepper sauce and both were to die for. If you had to pick my fav foods - these were it! Dessert was a melange of a mini brulee, sorbet and a flourless chocolate ganache. To die for. In addition to being served hot, fresh and generous in size, the presentation was gorgeous.

Monday - Buddy Dive and Dine special - discount for night boat dive and dinner, or for $10 you get a plate of either chicken or fish in our case Mahi Mahi in a bechmel sauce, rice and salad. Best buy on the island for Monday nights. Service was awful, but we weren't going anywhere and the fish was great. I had problems with one of the bartenders all week, didn't seem to want to take my order on multiple occaisions...

Tuesday we were night diving, ran into town between dives for a quick bite, no drinks. Toss up between Cactus Blue and WattaBurger, we took Cactus Blue. While we were the only people there (it was early 6:00 or so) service was S L O W and not good, relaxing slow - it was run out of water and a long time for refills slow. Split the local goat cheese salad - excellant, and ordered burgers. Burgers were OK, big and meaty, fries were great. I thought everthing a bit pricey, given other dining options available on island.

Diving makes us hungry and thoughts of Argentinian beef filled my head. Couldn't find a phone number in the book for Patagonia (bizarre) so we made reservations at Casablanca (hhmm...named for a town in Morocco, located on Bonaire and serving Argentinian beef, go figure) I opted for tomato soup and the Curmudgeon started with sausage app Chorizo y Morcilla. MANY thanks to our server who inquired if he wanted all Chorizo in leui of the Morcilla (it hit me - Morcilla is blood sausage) He took all Chorizo with a green sauce - delicious - and again thanks to the staff for asking! We both opted for steaks, had leftovers and were too stuffed for dessert. Next time we will opt for the mixed grill that looked huge! Service was terrific, though the guests sitting behind me were blowing their Marlboro smoke all over us (vehenament non-smokers). Prices very reasonable.

Thurs we did a cocktail sailing on the Samur, the wooden Thai junk anchored off SandDollar. Very pleasant cruise up the coast. Interesting history to the boat. The Curmudgeon did a Thai dinner cruise on her years ago and wanted me to experience it was well. Wine, beer and rum punch flowed freely while the 10 or so guests mingled and conversed. We got to spend time chatting with Mike, a retired oncologist now splitting his time between Houston and Bonaire. Extremely interesting guy and willing to share his experiences as a Bonaire property owner for which we are grateful! Half in the bag, we stopped at Sunset/Eddies @ SandDollar for late bite - prices are low, food great. I wish the owners much luck!

Our Friday night ritual is dinner at Mona Lisa, sitting out front and this year was no exception. Make your reservations early in the week as seating is limited and they were turning away a bunch of unhappy regulars/locals the night we visited. (Nothing beats good restaurant theatre!)The rain held off and the strong breeze kept the bugs at bay. We split the salmon salad - large plate of moist meat over greens, I had sesame encrusted tuna while Tim had the Dradu. Both were large, served hot w/ a family style side of potatoes lyonaisse. We killed a bottle of Australian chardonnay and both had desserts all for $130 pre-tip our big splurge for the week.

We also walked over to Lovers for ice cream a couple times - yummy! Ahhh, can't wait to go back, we will return for Salsa, Casablanca and Mona Lisa and will continue to try new places as well.

Great report , you are the first person to mention the Dengue in a while . I got back March 2nd , developed Dengue 6 days after I got home . I only got 4-6 bites all week . It is very real and very painfull . I just got back to work today . Was sick for a month . Do not underestimate the power of the mosquito .

It was nice meeting you guys. It was too bad we didnt get to dive together as you mentioned. I'm a Bonaire wh*re so you'll have to let me know when you guys go back.

and I didnt know it was your birthday on Sunday...I would have bought a round of drinks..although down there the birthday person buys the rounds. :)
