We've been staying with Peter's folks on Maui, but the whale was seen off Lanai.

I'm glad for you guys. The one time I had a close encounter was while sailing back into the harbor. The whale surfaced close and looked right at me...so close I forgot it was called a whale and could only point and grunt.

Your posting brought back great memories of my one UW humpback whale encounter -- last February off Molokini (during a Reef's End drift dive). I'm glad that your husband posted the movie. I've been trying to describe to my non-diving friends what it looked (and sounded) like, and haven't had much luck. This is a case where a moving picture may add important shades of meaning to our inadequate words.

I especially liked your description of how "the divemasters were jumping up and down in the water." I remember how everyone in our dive group was doing this. As you say, it sounds bizarre, but there is no other way to describe how everyone's body language radiates pure joy during a whale encounter.

I'm returning to Maui in two weeks, and your posting has increased my excitement level 1000%. Thank you for sharing your fantastic experience. May you and your husband have many more wondrous dive experiences!

Dave

Thanks, Peter, for posting the video... watched it 5 times through, just sucking up the sense of momentum and silence, and your breathing and the whale song all around you... wow!!! What an experience and memory. I'm delighted for you both, and smiling that you shared the vid with all of us.
