Hey everyone. I just moved to La Jolla from Northern California. I mainly dove in Monterey while I was there, and I really liked the group of divers at my old dive shop. Can anyone recommend a good dive shop and diving group here in San Diego? Where do people normally shore dive? I have some of my own gear but not all of it, so I usually rent reg/BC/tanks. I'm also looking for dive buddies!

Also, what kind of wet suits do you all wear? What is the water temperature like? Any good/bad months?

Welcome to So.Cal.:D I live 100 miles north but when ever I head south to dive, I totally love diving with Power Scuba divers.
Here is their link to them on our board: Power Scuba . You will find more info on them there.

Even though we are way south of Monterey, you will find our water temps very close to the mid.Cal waters (maybe few degrees warmer) So what you were comfortable with in Monterey, you will want to dive with here. Jump on in and enjoy...hope to see you in the water one day.

Wow I'm Jealous, I love that area. I went down to Monterey this last weekend, we had less then 10 ft of vis. Ja Jolla cove is nice for a quick snorkle. Enjoy the new pad.

Lots of divers around, you can pretty much always park at La Jolla Shores/Cove and hang out for a few minutes and meet up with some random divers. The clubs are quite good as well. For my money, the best diving around are on the weekend charter boats - which has the nice benefit of saving you from having to work with the shops in the area (most of which leave a lot to be desired). Give a PM if you ever want to get out and dive, we try to at least get in some shore diving 2-3 days a week and you can usually find us out on the weekends.

Water temps? I think the coldest I've found here is ~46'F down deep in the winter up to about ~66'F on the surface. Usually it's a pretty safe bet for ~52-58 on most dives. I dive dry, some (utterly crazy, imo) people dive wet in 7mm+ :-)

To say that you would have had to dive with all clubs and groups in San Diego, wouldn't you, Dave? :D

Timten,

We get our share of bad vis days in San Diego too, neverfear. But when it's good it's REALLY good!

Fair enough Bill, I should make it a point to do just that ASAP! I'll try to avoid the sweeping generalities in the future. :)

it can be tough, no doubt, Hatful, but definitely doable if you arrive fairly early... and certainly nothing to compare to the rough parking situation at Laguna on the weekends, yes?

Bill

I live in Orange County as well. The main problem I see with shore diving in San Diego is the parking. It's a scramble to find especially weekends.

I disagree with you. Laguna parking is much easier in my experience partly because of the new credit card enabled parking meters, also the population density is lower here. Coming from OC it's too hard to make it to SD early enough to avoid crowds.
