Just how loud a noise should the ScubAlert make?

Thank you all for your input.

I guess I might just have to exchange them with the surface-only version. I have never used them underwater so it's pretty much pointless [I have a steel pointer that works wonderfully when banged on the tank, and much more convenient too].

So the lesson is, if one expects the Aquatec ScubAlert [surface AND uw version] to work with any effectiveness on the surface, as it is advertised, you will be disappointed !

The Dive Alert company also makes a device similar to the ScubAlert call the Hammerhead. That's an apt name since the noise is made by a piston hammering on the a small plate. Your photo of the ScubAlert looks to be the same sort of unit, even though the text description doesn't match up.

For a while Dive Alert was claiming that the Hammerhead was good for both underwater and above water signalling. It isn't all that good for surface signalling, and they've removed that claim from their website. I left my Hammerhead with some DM down in Cozumel and bought a real Dive Alert.

It looks like ScubAlert is still trying to push their device as good for both above and below. It isn't. Get a real surface signalling device like the Dive Alert.

I have used the MiniHammerhead for the past few years and have found it work in and out of the water just great. Cannot say enough good things about it and strongly recommend it.

PM me if you would like further info.

I have both the surface only divealert and a hammerhead. The hammerhead is great when working with students and you need to get their attention. And the divealert surface unit is loud enough that I duck under when letting fly with it!
