I just started a monthly gift to Greenpeace of 30 USD. Instead of worrying about what's degrading the environment I figure it would be better to do something about it. Any comments welcome.

I almost hate to reply to this.
I was a member of Greenpeace back in the 60's - "Save the Whales" and all that. In those days the organization did some good.
My opinion - and this is my opinion based on what I've seen over the years - is that Greenpeace has been taken over by folks who are into collecting your money and grandstanding in ways to collect more money, but are counterproductive to their professed mission as they are perceived as a bunch of crazies by respectable scientists.
If you really want to make a difference, find some local foundation or organization that's working on water quality in a meaningful way - someone close enough that you can actually see the people and talk to them.
That's my comment.

I'll be doing some more research on greenpeace, to see if my gift will continue. Thanks for the info

Do yourself and the world an even bigger favor, put a stop payment on the cheque.

I support several organizations that work hard and acheive results in protecting and rebuilding the environment. Greenpeace is not even on the radar when it come to getting real results, but they are very proficient when it come to getting headlines.

Any particular reason why you singled out Greenpeace? There are a wide variety of environmental NGO's (non-government organizations) that do international work. Granted Greenpeace is far more proactive than most, but they do have quite a bad-boy reputation for stretching the envelope.

Myself, I annually donate to a local group that lobbies governments for improved water quality. I believe it money well spent.

By the way, would you happen to know of any sources that have info against greepeace? Like news.. etc. Sorry, forgot to say this in the first post.

Try this on for size.
If your eager to help out the world. Give $10 to some local org. thats helping out and send the other 20 to feed, educate and cloth some people somewhere in the world.
Greenpeace is a waste of your money.

I'm starting to understand you guys' view but I'd still appreciate some compelling evidence. Maybe this is because I wasn't around when greenpeace built their bad rep. thx

Well, a great deal of their negative reputation is overexaggerated. Like I said earlier, they are a very proactive group. During the 1980's they did some cute things like sabotage whaling ships and block harbors. I believe the Argentinian navy fired on and sank their ship the Rainbow Warrior for doing some outrageous thing in Antarctica. Greenpeace has a tendency to use it's boats and ships to harass other boats and ships. Sometimes what they do comes very close to breaking international and national navigation laws, on rare occasions they do in fact break them. The U.S. Navy will never forgive Greenpeace for harassing a nuclear missile submarine; I believe the navy commander eventually got fed up and surfaced his boat directly underneath the Greenpeace zodiac, swamping it. :11ztongue

But they do have some good points, so I don't like to bash them outright. Much as the Coast Guard can't stand them, Greenpeace does clue them in to a great many high seas violations. Greenpeace possesses what few NGO's do not; coastal boats and ocean-going ships. They are an invaluable extra set of eyes on the ocean, and lord knows there's precious little enforcement presence out there. I just wouldn't arm Greenpeace, as they might go vigilante. :boxing_sm

How could an ultra-conservative old salt like you ever have been a member of Greenpeace?
