Duncan Price once bubbled...
To be honest, I really dislike the term "technical diving" and the mass marketing juggernaut that has followed in its wake.
Duncan

With respect, Duncan; I believe that the term "technical diving" is required. There is a need for a split between the concept of recreational diving with its inherent "safe zone" concept and the diving that absolutely requires more experience, training, sofistication, and equipment whether it be due to overhead environments or decompression.

I do agree with the rest of your post. In every sport/pastime that I have ever been involved in, there has been a number of poseurs that think that they can buy acceptability into the club by having the newest equipment and spouting the talk. And of course, there are always people who will cater (sell) to them. As always the true masters will stand out due to thier open acceptance of others, thier desire to help others, and their willingness to learn from others.

But me, I'd rather be diving so I can build the experience so I can actually get to the point where I can spout off in the pub over a pint and look like I know what the heck I'm talking.
