My GF said she heard something (on radio or tv) about there being a higher than average jellyfish population in RI this spring. Anyone else hear about that and if so, what was the report exactly??

Don't know anything about this specific incident, but a couple years ago I went diving at Ft Wetherhill and we had to literally wade through huge opaque jellyfish with a colored underbody. Yay for drysuits. I was just worried I'd fall and face plant on one of them.

The jellyfish in question is the lion's mane. The report she saw was because DEM issued a warning not to touch them because some of them washed up in Barrington, however, this is a very common species around here so this sort of thing happens every year.

This particular species can be pretty painful but they are almost never life threatening. I've personally been stung twice over the years. Below is a picture of one I took a few years ago to give you an idea what they look like.

Yep, that be them. It was quite a sight to be diving in 50 degree water with jellyfish all around.

To me they look better from shore :)

The first time I was at Wetherill (late last fall) I saw a couple of really large ones near the surface. I'm not sure if they were the same species, as they were really red/pink in color. I almost swam right into them, I had to make a "manuever" to get out of their way!

Went diving last Saturday in Tiverton, RI a lot of jellyfish the water was about 55 degrees my dive buddy got one right across the face. Not fun at all but yea they are pretty bad right now.

No more than usual out in front of my house(West side of Jamestown).

If you are diving, I say enjoy them because they are nice to watch. If swimming, its a whole different story. Now if the vis is bad that's another story too and you end up kissing one while diving.
