Howdy,

I was diving Sunrise (among other locations) last week when I got a shot of this jelly--that I originally thought was a Fried Egg, but no longer think so. Can someone help me ID it?

Thanks!

Dale

Uncle Pug:
Why don't you think it is a fried egg jelly?

I looked up a few and they seemed to have much longer tenticles and also appeared to be generally more rounded-- like a globe. This one looked much more linear to me...
On top of that, it looks more poached than fried to me. Perhaps that is why I was having a hard time with the ID in the first place.

Are you intimating that I really have a shot of a fried egg after all?

Looks like an Egg Yolk Jelly (aka Fried Egg Jelly) to me. Their central mass is yellow, they have 16 lappets and rhopalia (scalloped edges, for lack of a better description). This looks pretty classic.

I'm going to officially call it an egg yolk jelly. Thanks for the feedback. And, thanks for the 10, Bob. You're very kind.

Yah, they're not easy to photo as the focusing becomes a problem.. it's grrrrrr-eat shot...

Sorry :eek:fftopic:

Great picture. Did you do something in photoshop to turn the background black? Would you let me know the steps? Thanks!

crab, whatever it is, that is an amazing picture... just awesome

ann marie, as far as i know (i'm a newbie), certain settings in the camera
will result in a black background because the light of the flash hits nothing,
so it doesn't register back to the lens.
