scbababe:
Take triptone 1/2hr before a boat dive.
Actually I found taking Bonine the night before, and again in the morning was the secret....

Seas were 1-2 feet, vis on top-80 feet!
Vis on bottom 0-5 feet. The dreaded thermocline's back affecting areas from here to canaveral. All the amberjack, spadefish, and barracuda were pushed to the surface. Lets hope it doesnt last all summer like it did last year.

yes, this weekend would have been awesome to go diving, with the wind from the SW or right out of the W

i actually don't mind the low vis; gives me a chance to
look at all the bottom critters

alas, i missed it

If you want ok vis, stay in close to MR like we did. had about 20 foot vis as opposed to 5 foot vis further out. Dove a barge and a wreck. First dive.....Saw the biggest sting ray ever just chillin on the bottom, it was about 8 feet in diameter. Bunch of random critters,2 big groupers (one of which found itself on my spear, 18 lbs), a school of red snappers, school of cigar minnows and grunts, school of spadefish. Tons of life on this wreck! Second dive, the vis deteriorated to 10-15 feet. The tug did not have many hiding spots for critters, so not much to see here. I took 2 rolls of pics so they will be up on my website after I get back from Costa Rica on the 18th.

sounds awesome... no diving for me this weekend or the next

ok... long time without posting... beacuse it's been a long time since i've gone
ocean diving off Jacksonville

went today, with Jacksonville Scuba Center. they have a six-pack boat,
and cater more to spearfishermen. the captain and two-man crew were very
good. had a great time. the DM, james, was awesome, and a very good diver.

we went out to Horseshoe Ledge first. water was in the low 80's up top,
with a thermocline around 50 feet. the water below was 76 at its coldest, so
not bad. the water above the thermocline was PACKED with jellyfish and other
floating things... i got stung on my left hand, just a red rash, not too bad.

on the second dive, we went to the Culverts. same conditions.

pretty good vis, about 30 feet despite a lot of particulates in the water column.
lots of fish. guys got pretty good size flounder, nice triggers, a couple of
nice sheepshead, and nice porgy.

the highlight of the dive:

the DM and another guy were diving when TWO tiger sharks came crusing by.
the DM pointed them out to the guy, and the guy took a shot at one of the tigers (and
missed). the DM was pretty hot when he came up. "why you shoot that shark?"
the guy thought it was a cobia. a 12-foot long cobia. hehehehe... live and learn

i didn't see any sharks (dang it), but had lots of fun

1. baitfish thick as a floor over the Culverts. coming from above, looked like
you could walk on them

2. black sea bass. tons of these around, including juveniles

3. cubbyu. there were also some drums.

4. jacknife fish there were also some drum juveniles

5. porkfish i don't see too many of these around Jacksonville

also from today's dive:

1. sponge (i think)

2. soft corals and whatnot on the ledge

3. sheepshead (a couple of the guys got some nice-sized ones)

4. sea cucumber (i think) this one was pretty big

5. scrawled cowfish. half of a very shy pair. took me for ever to get a decent pic

Nice Andy. Thanks for the post. I can understand why that scrawled cowfish is shy, look at its side, looks like something tried to take a bit out of it!

What are the opinions with the Atlantic Pro Dive group at Jax Beach. I have meet with them on several ocassions and they also have a boat out of Mayport. The owner (Steve Parks) went to school with many of the people I know.

they're a good outfit, also probably the cheapest in Jax (about $80.00 for a
two-tank dive). they run 12-packs.

they tend to do the same spots over and over, but that's not an issue if you
are visiting.
