As NetDoc spoke to recently, there is lots of good stuff on the horizon for the board, and for our little section.

Some of this stuff requires decisions be made rather quickly. A few of the more urgent and essential decisions include:

#1) A name for the entire California Group. The current California Dreamers name will stick if we don't make a move over the next week or so. We've had some suggestions so far (some good ones actually)... but we'll need to wrap it up by next week.

#2) To make the No Cal / So Cal thing work, I need to provide a proper dividing line. You all know where I stand on California Geography so I need to excuse myself from a vote in this process and serve as a referee. Please provide your suggestions as to where to draw the line, geographically. Sorry Central Cal, we're only diving this great state into two parts for our purposes here. Please suggest a city or other easily identifiable border...no GPS coordinates, you wacky people.

So you know - the archives are currently in the No Cal board. I'll be moving the last few months of So Cal stuff back here soon. I will not endeavor to sift it all. AFTER I make the move, if there is a So Cal thread that you have a special fondness for, PM me and I can move it to the So Cal room.

Thanks ken.

I've responde re: names, so won't again, but I think that we should have kelp in the name, since we're one of the few places in the world lucky enough to have it.

Re: dividing line, remembering Abe Lincoln's prescient words about pleasing anyone...... I suggest something practical, and that is related to where people go for boats. I'd say So Cal people go no further than SB for dive boats as a general rule (day boats, that is), and people come down from Pismo/Oceano area.

So somewhere in SLO county would be my dividing line. Perhaps up to SLO county line for so cal.....

Chris

So you know - No Cal is talking Big Sur.

BIG SUR...

I'm such a So Cal. I was thinking SB.... (more like Ventura...) Too fully. We'll get this wrapped up in the next few days. Thanks for the assist.

There is a nice political dividing line that bifurcates the state along the northern border of SLO, Kern, and San Bernadino County Lines. By using it, it also addresses lakes and other bodies of water.

As for names, I have posted quite a few over the past months. None of which that I am particularly fond of. I do agree that Kelp should be in the name and encompasses both North and South. I offer for further consideration...(may not be original).

California Kelp Keepers/Protectors/Guardians/Defenders [take your pick]

Wow - I was thinking Pt. Conception as the divider...

It's the only one that makes sense to me.

Keeper in our name MAY be an issue with organizations under the umbrella of The Waterkeeper Alliance, such as Orange County Coastkeeper, Baykeeper, SBChannelkeepers, etc. I just sent an email to OCCK to find out if we can consider keeper in our name.

Whoops. Here is the response on using keeper..."The "keeper" name is protected. They would have to check with the Waterkeeper Alliance headquarters."

I agree that kelp should be in our California name, but I am rather partial!

California Kelp Clingers (I am reaching...)
California Kelp Critters

Otter, I remember liking many of your ideas in earlier posts. Can you repost them here? If we have a comprehensive list from which to choose and then choose the best five or so, then we can do a poll.

Regional boundary: I vote for Point Conception since our regional weather reports always stop there and it tends to be our boat dive boundary (good point ChrisM), but I could also go with including SLO and Morro, etc. Maybe the Central CA folks should have a strong say in this aspect.

We're such So Cals..... Its looking like Big Sur or Morro Bay is likely the line.

Thanks for your input so far everyone.

Ken

I'm a Northern California resident. Morro
Bay is clearly in Soutnern California. I think
most Northern California divers would think
that Big Sur is in their turf. Both of the
Monterey Dive Guides (Watkins, and
Rosenberg) both go as far south as Jade
Cove. Watkins goes a little further south to
Cape San Martin.

Big Sur is a big place, and not suitiable
for a boundary (the boundary line would
be 20 miles wide).

I'd put the boundary at Cape San Martin
or Pt. Piedras Blancas.

And it's NOT No Cal (that's a diet soda),
it's Nor Cal, if you insist on abreviating it.

Appreciate the note. We'll get this thing mopped up by next week.

I was fortunate enough to just go diving in the Big Sur area this past Friday. Beautiful.

I guess we'll live with whatever split line is decided. I don't have a firm opinion on this one.

As to the name, I'll second the California Kelp Divers (CKD). It's simple and it says who we are.

It also sounds better than the California Macrocystis Pyrifera Divers :D
