I'm at a loss trying to identify specific dive sites at the Channel Islands. I only have Franko's maps, and they do not have sufficient detail -- particularly the esoteric dive sight location names.

Do I need to be a member of a secret society, or is there a readily available map that will let me in on the boat captain's complete list of names?

Tanks,

Probelm is, most boat captains have their own names for certain spots. Franko's has, I believe, a pretty complete list of the primary (ship rock, isthmus reef, quarry, etc). spots

For Catalina Island, pick up Boating & Diving Catalina Island by Bruce Wicklund it's has topos, pics, charts and descriptions of darn near the entire Catalina coastline, I've heard the GPS coordinates are a little off though and it's all in B&W but very complete. I picked mine up on Amazon.com for like $2.50 plus shipping.

As an example of what ChrisM "said," the site on Catalina known as Italian Gardens (its official name) is also called 'Gator, Sea Bass and at least one other name that escapes me at the moment. Heck, it's enough to confuse even a long-time local!

When I was V.P. of the Catalina Conservancy, one of the things I tried to do was ensure that people used the correct historic names for locations around the island. There were a few who wanted to change certain names, but I tried to explain that species samples and other scientific information were collected and referenced to these historical site names and 100 years from now people looking back would get quite confused.

I also created GIS data layers with historic place names used during different eras in our past so researchers could better tie current names to past collection sites.

I agree with Dr. Bill. I know of at least one Capt that calls Parson's Landing, Starlight, even though there is a Starlight further west.
