There are some monsters in NC. You have to get at least 30 miles offshore but it is well worth the run. Check out my buddies site. www.wilmingtonspearfishing.com follow the "lobster" link on the left. It shows some of the bugs we've caught over the years.
We catch spineys here from Morehead south to Wilmington. You are allowed to keep 2 per day per person. They can't have eggs.

Yes, there is even a wreck dubbed the "Lobster Wreck" (real name Porta Allegra or something like that) because of the abundance and size of the bugs.
