I have just seen the YouTube review for the new Garmin surface buoy. It looks awesome. It appears to only communicate with Garmin dive computers (as you'd expect I suppose). Does anyone know of a similar product that works with a Petrel?

No. Quite different technology. Petrel only has Bluetooth, i.e. very short range underwater, maybe a few cm. Even the AI models from Shearwater, which use a 38 kHZ ELF RF signal, have a range of maybe 1.5m. The Garmin uses 2-way proprietary acoustics underwater and claims a range of maybe 100m from the S1 buoy, which then has WiFi for an above surface range of maybe 60m.

Ah Damn. Thanks. Looks like I have to stick with Old School communications. I'm not changing my Shearwater computers, I love them too much.
