So here I am, a new diver, living right near what could justifiably be called the worst diving water on the Gulf of Mexico. Vermilion Bay in Louisiana is just too muddy to dive in. A trip to Florida takes a whole weekend, at least.

A one day trip 50 miles out to the oil platforms is a great day trip, but I know only one friend with a suitable boat, so I can't dive often.

Is there any charter service running out of Vermilion Bay to do platform dives? Are there any other divers in the Lafayette area interested in getting groups together for platform dives?

There has to be some way of getting some dive time in without having to go to Florida. What do other Louisiana divers do? I love diving, and I don't want to be limited to a couple of dives a year.

Cruise on over to Lake Charles and jump on Darryl Walkers boat. He does rig trips, and dives at Sonnier Bank, also known as three hickey rock, among others. Darryl can be found at True Blue Watersports.

Drive to Florida. I try to get there at least once a month.

Darryl is a good guy and true blue shop has always treaded me right.

Thanks, I'll give Darryl a call. I'm surprised that there is no charter option from Vermilion Bay. At least none that I have found.

I went over to True Blue yesterday for a spring gathering of the True Blue Dive Crew. I was thoroughly impressed by the operation Darrell and Cher have going there. Their shop is organized, clean, and has lots of inventory. They appear to be extremely well organized and genuinely nice people. All in all, a very well run operation.

I also had the chance to meet a lot of folks in the dive club. Also very impressive. They were happy so see an out-of-towner and were happy to connect me with upcomoing dive trips.

Thanks for the recommendation.
