I don't want to hijack this thread but since it invloves PADI what the hey! Does anyone know or think they know where the acronym P.A.D.I. came from or how it was chosen. Ihave my own story I can relate but I'm holding back to see if anyone comes up with anything-M

I sincerely hope not. I'd hate to think that I got my training from an organization run by a bunch of unpaid amateurs!!
Hell I did BSAC clubs :11: :eyebrow:

I thought it stood for 'Professional Association of Diving Instructors' - but I bet there are a few more thoughts on this one!!

My story starts with the word or letters P.A.D.I and then they came up with the words, any ideas?? Does everyone or anyone know who actually started PADI and where?

I know NAUI used to be non-profit, but this changed a year or two ago. As for "non-profit" institutions having that status because they're not out to make money, that's not all true. I know of one specific marine science education facility in Florida that holds non-profit status because it MAKES MORE MONEY THAT WAY. Something about donations... either they don't get taxed on them or they don't have to report them. Maybe some of you lawyer folks can clarify what the financial perks of "non-profit" status is in the U.S..

NAUI has both a non-profit segment and a for profit segment.
The non-profit segment is made up of the members i.e. Divemasters, Assitant Instructors, Instructors etc, etc up to the Course Directors.

The for profit segment is primarily the HQ staff and operations located in the Tampa area. They do all the marketing stuff at the agency level, provide the educational materials etc, etc.

YMCA may be non-profit; not sure about any of the others.
