Hi everyone! I found this site during a search about women using trimix. I was recently told that I can't join a trimix class at my university because I am a woman! The DO said that the gear load would be too much for me to handle (and I am no weakling). Any thoughts on this? I would love some articles and facts to bring back to him, so anyone who can contribute I'd really appreciate it!

Absolute garbage.

Contact the different agencies - I'm sure they would all love to provide you with statistics, and any other ammunition.

On a side - maybe you don't even want to learn with this guy....sounds like a weird attitude to me.

From my experience, if you tell a woman she can't do something, she is going to do it..........have fun.

This probably would be better served in the woman's issues forum; and I know there are a few threads in there in regards to sexist attitudes.

I'll have to point this one to Chickdiver; she'll have a field day.

No. It is not true that women can't do trimix. There are no physicalogical reasons why not. For proof, go and look here http://www.wdhof.org/. There are lots of female trimix/technical divers.

Now, technical diving can be hard on the back. A set of big doubles and a stage bottle can easy top 100 lbs. Combine that with dry suit, weights, and other gear can be a real work out. Most people need help getting geared up and into the water. I would recommend that you try it in a pool and see if you can handle it.

Being turned down because of physical capability is one thing and perhaps justifiable, because of sex is something else entirely.

Well, now, inasmuch as my trimix instructor was a woman... and a 5'4" woman too... handled those doubles just fine, thank you.

What I would consider, is the quality of training you would receive from your university. I might slight them and tell them I don't trust their skills as instructors and will be taking my business to a professional, responsible group of instructors. I wouldn't want to be taught by anyone who doesn't want to teach. They, as an instructor, would be a poor teacher.

That being a female sh#@ is a load of BS. I suggest you ask this question as you did here on THE DECO STOP. You will get plenty of response from certified female Trimix Instructors. As a matter of fact I think that there has been a female diver on one of the expeditions to touch bottom on the Britannic in 400fsw. I've seen Charlene Baker do a dive to 280fsw in very cold water in my backyard. And she is no monster woman.
Total BS

The list of things women can't do that women do is practically endless. Any time you hear someone say "women can't......." disregard it unless it requires a penis.
