Actually, I think it's a pretty darned healthy one, Howard. Life balance & all that. ;)

Well... Compared to other internet forums that I have seen; I wouldn't consider a get together with other users of Verizon's XV6700 phones, or make vacation plans with other owners of Smooth Collies.

ScubaBoardians that I have hung out with and gone diving with are part of a greater extended family IMHO. If that's an unhealthy approach, then excuse me.

As to the threads vanishing... I think what NetDoc did with the "democracy" thread was great. Clear and concise.

If things weren't conducted like secret police, people wouldn't think that there is a secret police force ;)

Grand visions of secret police say more about you than they do about scubaboard moderators.

And I say this as someone who has been through this exact argument numerous times starting from BBSes in the mid-80s to Usenet in the early-90s and now on to internet web forums. And before I burned out on these kinds of arguments I typically was on the side of those who were 'fighting the power' so I know exactly where you're coming from. And I know from prior experience that these arguments either end by the users deciding they'll put up with the sysops/moderators or the users going off and starting up their own BBS/forum. In fact I can think of two scuba forums off the top of my head that have been spun off of scubaboard for arguments similar to this (not exactly the same, but history rhymes rather than repeats).

None of your civil rights are being violated by moderators 'disappearing' threads with no public explanation of why. If you don't like it, set up your own forum and come up with your own rules. That'll actually satisfy your need to be in control which no amount of public argumentation on scubaboard ever will.

We're just having a healthy discussion - I'm not "disillusioned" with scubaboard. I have no interest in creating my own forum, nor do I personally see any reason for me to leave here. If the staff is open to discussion and suggestions about potential policy for the board, then why shouldn't we throw in our 2¢

If you think I'm a paranoid freak, sitting in my cube with a colander on my head (or tin foil hat) to ward off the mind probes... you're wrong.

I just wish I had a chance to see what all the fuss was about. I'm sure there was a lot more controversary posted after I last did.

But I understand why he doesn't want politics here. It would be a pain to moderate.

yes we say now we could keep it civil, but even a moderated local community forum (not SB) where I live has turned into a political argument forum by people who all they want to do is argue and sling mud. I'm sure that Pete, and the rest of us, don't want that here or the non diving element discussions it might attract.

sometimes you gotta draw the line in the sand on stuff.

I'm sure there was a past reason for this that caused this experience.

I agree.

Does this mean David and I are the only ones still doing that?

:D

IT'S A SCUBA DIVING BOARD!!!!!!!!!

:blinking:

So is ScubaBoard supposed to be a place where people ONLY discuss SCUBA and SCUBA related topics? Or is it also about the community of people who dive?

I'm not saying that politics belongs here. I don't mix politics and anything really... it's pretty volatile.
