I have just been informed by PM that I am not welcome on this forum because I lack the requisite experience.

If that's the policy, then I suggest something to this effect be included in the forum title.

It seems to me that a question about gas switching is in the realm of technical diving. So I chose this forum as the most logical place to post it.

In any case, I'll unsubscribe from this thread and stay out of this forum until I am considered to be worthy of associating with its exalted members.

Who told you that you were not welcome?
Regardless of the origin being a member or a moderator I think it is pretty rich. Scubaboard police????
They allready created a private tek to tek section for those who do not play well with rank and file divers seeking a better understanding, so what gives?

That is crazy. Creating mystique and elitism in tech diving can do harm. Tech in of itself is not a badge of honor, nor an underground covert operation. It is just a different form of the sport of scuba. Hopefully the more people understand about tech and the limits of recreational diving, the less inclined they will be to chance their luck without proper training and experience. Surely the sport will benefit more from us being open to answering questions about what tech actually is. If you don't want to be a part of that, be selective of the threads you choose to read and don't take an instructor's course.

Mods if you think there is a better home for this thread, please move it so that the OP can participate. The OP has been nothing but polite and inquisitive in all his posts.

I don't think it's your question, I think it must be this (from your profile):

Dives 0 - 24

In that case, I expect to be ejected from this subforum shortly as well...!

All the best, James

Okay, I'm back.

Someone has pointed out that I probably misinterpreted the PM. So I've asked that person what she really meant and am waiting for a reply.

In the meantime I'll re-subscribe to this thread and pretend I belong here.

Thanks for the supportive words. (Hm, did I take my Citalopram today?)

Back to the original question - gas switching and a computer.

It's worth pointing out that if one did switch to a deco gas, and didn't have a computer so equipped, that all that would happen is the computer would overstate the deco required.

(the same kinda happens if the computer calls for a gas switch, and it is unacknowledged.)

All the best, James

Okay, I was definitely overreacting. She was telling me that there are some on the forum who might consider me to be unqualified to post here. So, as Roseanne Rosanna Danna used to say, "Never mind!"

You already own the best computer; your brain.

Be a thinking diver and you have already started on that path by asking appropriate questions and reading from good sources.

But by going against the computer like this don't you risk the computer going into its lock-out mode and not cooperating with you if you want to do another dive that day?

If you did the appropriate time for your exposure and the deco gas, yes, you'd probably lock out the computer.

If you got yourself into the deco, didn't have cut tables, switched gas while following a computer that couldn't handle it; I'm thinking maybe you should sit out 24 hours.

All the best, James

that's the beauty of a deco-oriented computer. you won't lock it out. it will keep on giving you its best guess based on what you're telling it you're doing.
