I'd like to be on a dive team in Monterey this year for the cleanup day. Does anyone know of a team leader that needs volunteers or should I just register on the Ocean Conservancy website?

Hope to see some of you there.

Happy diving,

I would be interested in this as well, or at least doing shore cleanup in the Monterey area. Any info would be great.

(Hi Michelle!! :) )

Last Spring I photographed the Earthday Cleanup Dive at Del Monte Beach in Monterey ( http://www.zooomr.com/photos/10789@Z01/sets/18921/ ). The two dive clubs that organized that event are not doing anything for Coastal Cleanup Day, so I'm looking for another dive get-together to photograph (in exchange for copies of the best photos, and all that business). If anyone hears of any organized (or semi-organized) cleanup dives going on near Monterey, please let me know.

Perhaps we should just do an informal thing and see about getting some divers together and do DelMonte or something? I am sure that we could arrange something. That being said - I have never done a coastal cleanup so I wouldn't know.

Thanks Chuck!

I'll call Aquarius tomorrow and let you all know what I find out.

Hi Sarah,
I've never done a clean up either, so I'd like to join a team if we can but if that doesn't work out, I'll register and see if they can direct us on how to put a team together.

Happy diving,

I see you live in Santa Rosa, you might want to call Roger at Napa Dive and Sport he does a clean up in Lake Berryessa, the vis usually sucks but not bad enough that you can't find a lot of trash and treasures. You will need to pre-register at Napa Dive and Sport (707) 257-2822. Some of the details are it costs $20.00. however you get a free T-Shirt, BBQed Lunch, tank fill, and a raffle ticket where most everyone seems to win something from gift certificates, dive gear, or bottles of wine. The date is Saturday September 15th at the Putah Creek Bridge. There is plenty of trash to be found. You should be comfortable diving in a low vis environment. Contact Roger if you have any further details at the above phone number.

I called Dean at the Harbor Master office about a week ago; he said that no one pulled a permit to clean under the pier at Del Monte. The permit is free and it sounded like he would like a group to step up. It sounds like the only time it is being cleaned is Earth Day.

Tom, were you thinking about organizing that? I'd be interested in helping out. I was planning on helping out at the Lover's point cleanup too, but afterwards or even on another day, I'd be able to help. Here is a thought though. Wouldn't it serve to have that area cleaned up on a semi-regular basis? One day a year doesn't seem like enough. If you didn't want to organize a Del Monte Cleanup, I'd be willing to do the legwork on it, but probably for another day after the Lover's Point Cleanup.
